Michael Dorn wants to make a movie and he needs your help to get started. The Star Trek alumnus doesn’t want to make a sci-fi film like you might expect. Instead he’s got his sights set on a romantic comedy called Through the Fire. Dorn has started a Kickstarter campaign to fund the project, and he’s hoping the Star Trek fan base will help him accomplish his lifelong dream.
Dorn has always wanted to get into directing. In fact, he started out behind the camera but later found himself in front of it, and in the process wound up with a 30-year career as an actor. After years of being typecast in sci-fi movies and TV shows, Dorn wants to show Hollywood that sci-fi fans are hungry to see their favorite actors in other genres. He turned to Kickstarter to gain the artistic freedom he needs to make Through the Fire happen.
He’s the setup: Despite their professional differences, a theater critic and theater actress fall in love after they’ve been set up on a blind date. Through the Fire will star Michael Dorn and Anne-Marie Johnson, and the pair also wrote the script together. The film will feature a few other actors from the Star Trek universe, including Marina Sirtis, Armin Shimerman, Nana Visitor, and Kitty Swink.
Through the Fire’s ultimate goal is $750,000, and at the moment it seems like they’ve hit the $16,000 mark in one day. The Kickstarter campaign will end on October 5th, so there’s still plenty of time to donate.
Some of the benefits of contributing to Dorn’s project are enticing, ranging from a digital copy of the finished film to getting a producer’s credit and a chance to hang out with Michael Dorn and Marina Sirtis, and most everyone who donates money will receive a “Friends of Worf” original hoodie. That’s totally worth a donation!
Dorn ends the Kickstarter campaign page with a quote from the movie Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.” It seems like a very fitting way to cap off the passion Michael Dorn has for this project and his fans.
