A number of recent movies have been sequels to films that were released in the 20th century, including Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water. This formula seems to be working as these sequels have broken box office records, and Movieweb reports that another sequel to a 1990s property is in development. Nicolas Cage dished a bit about the plot of Face/Off 2, stating, “I think Face/Off is a sequel that lends itself to a lot of twists and turns and unpredictability…It’s almost like if you factor in the idea of offspring and Castor and Sean having children and these children grow up, then it becomes like three-dimensional chess, and then it’s not just the two, John Travolta and myself, it’s four of us ping-ponging and going at different levels, and it becomes even more complex.”

Face/Off 2 has already secured both Nicolas Cage and John Travolta as well as Godzilla vs Kong director Adam Wingard to helm the project, and seems up to the task of putting together the next generation of fights between Castor and Sean.

Face/Off was a John Woo action film that included the director’s signature imagery in a plot about an FBI agent, played by John Travolta, in the chase for a terrorist portrayed by Nicolas Cage. Events lead to the two switching places by way of a face transplant, and the rest of the movie sees the two actors switching roles with Travolta as the terrorist. Nicolas Cage hinted that Face/Off 2 will feature even more identity mayhem as the children of both characters undergo the same surgery.

Director Adam Wingard is working with long-time collaborator Simon Barrett on the script, which is reported to be a true sequel that will pick up from the events of the first movie. The pair also worked on V/H/S, V/H/S 2, Blair Witch, and The Guest among other projects together. Nicolas Cage said he was enthusiastic about working with Wingard on Face/Off 2 because, in addition to having similar tastes to the director, he also admires his cinematic knowledge.

Adam Wingard is already familiar with making new movies out of existing properties, as evidenced by Godzilla vs Kong and the upcoming Godzilla and Kong, as well as his Blair Witch reboot sequel, another 1990s property that saw a resurgence. Directing Nicolas Cage and John Travolta in Face/Off 2 seems to fall well within the director’s wheelhouse as he adds new angles to existing ideas. His segments of the found footage V/H/S movies also reveal his ability to innovate as they breathed life into a genre that is difficult because it’s so easy to make cliche.

John Woo’s vision in the original film featured lots of action, gunplay, and visual aesthetics as swirling clothing and a cowboy Western ambiance evoke the style of Akira Kurosawa or Sergio Leone. Adam Wingard has promised that he is trying to make the sequel live up to the original, and although he is finding that process challenging his past work shows that he is up to the task. Other news has leaked about the Nicolas Cage movie, including that Keanu Reeves was being looked at to be the villain of Face/Off 2.

Not much else is known about the movie, which hasn’t even appeared on IMDB for the actors or director, showing how early in its development the project is. While the plot reveals about the children of the two lead characters give fans something, the characters of the two progeny have not yet been cast. With Nicolas Cage and John Travolta both ready to star in Face/Off 2, all that is needed is a completed script and a production schedule.
