Nic Cage and John Travolta once got together for one of the more interesting and insane movies ever conceived and then executed as a big-budget action film. They somehow pulled it off in a tense and sharp film about an identity swap taken to its most alarming and violent end. Even at the time, it didn’t seem like this particular film was ripe for a remake or a sequel. But that was incorrect. Now, according to Small Screen, not only are we getting a return to Face/Off but Nic Cage and John Travolta are both coming back for the sequel. This news is almost as insane as the original movie was the first time around.

This next Face/Off is slated to be a sequel film to the original and will apparently pick up at some point after the original film’s events. Considering that flick came out almost 25 years ago, both Nic Cage and John Travolta are going to look quite different than their Sean Archer and Castor Troy characters from the original. While this latest rumor isn’t completely confirmed, there is speculation that each would be coming in a cameo role rather than leading the film. This makes more than a little sense considering in the original, in the end, Nic Cage’s character dies.

Again, assigning specific roles for either Nic Cage or John Travolta in this movie or in the previous one is a little dicey because they, of course, swapped faces the better part of the film. And considering the sequel keeps the same name, presumably we get another face mix up again leading to even more confusion. So while yes, Cage’s Troy died and Travolta’s Archer lived, for most of the movie Cage was Archer and Travolta was Troy. See what I mean? This kind of thing gets confusing.

Adam Wingard is the director assigned this madness of a sequel after John Woo helmed the original. Wingard apparently sees this next film as a sequel and according to the Small Screen scoop, they are developing a plot device that would be able to bring both John Travolta and Nic Cage back into the mix without too many mental hurdles. Famous last words on that, though we suspended a fair amount of disbelief with the original facelifting already. Wingard has another big-budget film about to hit the screen with Godzilla vs. Kong releasing later this month.

Nic Cage and John Travolta led the original Face/Off which was a critical win, scoring a whopping 92% on Rotten Tomatoes thanks to both actors essentially playing themselves, and then playing the other guy. That, plus some cool action and a guessing game premise helped win the day. It did well at the box office as well, hitting about $246 million on its $80 million budget.

We are sure to get more news on this latest Nic Cage and John Travolta casting with the rumors around the movie only heating up. At this point, it would be just a little disappointing if both weren’t featured in the sequel.
