Top Gun: Maverick has smashed through yet another record. Paramount released the film on its streaming platform over the weekend and it quickly became its most-watched movie domestically in its opening weekend. Now Paramount is reporting that the film is its most-watched film globally in its opening weekend (via Variety).

It’s no surprise that streaming audiences are driving up the viewership numbers for Top Gun: Maverick. The movie got fantastic reviews and it would be the perfect film to throw on with the family over the holidays. It was certainly good timing on Paramount’s part, and Tom Cruise’s star power likely helped drive those numbers up as well.

The record was broken over the December 22 to 25 weekend and surpassed the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 premiere weekend by 60%. The original Top Gun also got a boost of 400% in viewership and Cruise’s Mission Impossible films also got a 140% bump. Paramount+ is also offering 50% of its streaming plan until January 2, so plenty of people probably took the opportunity to check out Top Gun: Maverick at a lower price point.

Top Gun: Maverick has already soared past plenty of records this year, particularly for its star Tom Cruise. The film gave Cruise his best opening weekend ever and it was also Cruise’s first film that broke the $1 billion mark at the box office. It seems like there’s no slowing the Top Gun sequel down.

Top Gun: Maverick has also set some other impressive records for Paramount Pictures other than smashing records on the Paramount+ streaming platform. Most notably, it was Paramount Pictures’ highest-grossing domestic release ever. The film has also nabbed some Golden Globes nominations, which bodes well for a run at the 2023 Oscars.

Top Gun: Maverick also landed on the 2022 AFI Awards Movies of the Year list, which often is a good predictor for films that get wins and nominations at the Oscars. Some other films that landed on the list include the sci-fi hit Everything Everywhere All at Once, Stephen Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, the visual spectacle of James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water, Jordan Peele’s Nope, and Oscar-buzzy Elvis starring Austin Butler. We’ll have to see if the Top Gun sequel can continue its streak of good luck at the Oscars.

Top Gun: Maverick starred Tom Cruise as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, who returns to Top Gun to train a group of elite graduates to take on a mission they might not come back from. The film was directed by Joseph Kosinski with a screenplay by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie. Along with Cruise, the film starred Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Charles Parnell, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Bashir Salahuddin, Lewis Pullman, Jay Ellis, Danny Ramirez, Greg Tarzan Davis, and Val Kilmer.

If you want to check out Top Gun: Maverick for yourself, you can stream it on Paramount+. It wouldn’t be surprising if the film gets another sequel with the award buzz, the streaming performance, and the box office dollars. Stay tuned for more news about the Top Gun franchise.
