The Jurassic World series takes its place in box office history as Jurassic World: Dominion has earned $1 billion in ticket sales as of Thursday night’s receipts. Deadline reports that the film brought in just over $376 million in domestic sales and $624 million internationally. This makes it the seventh Universal movie to reach this mark, and the third in the Jurassic Park franchise.

The movie is the series closer to Jurassic Park, bringing the protagonists from both series in to stand against the villainous Biosys. Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum all return to their Jurassic Park roles beside Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard as the group attempts to thwart the machinations of the greedy corporation. Subplots from both the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World series overlap as the characters interact in their goal.

The movie was directed by Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow, who also wrote it with Emily Carmichael. It was produced by Amblin Entertainment, which was founded by director and producer Steven Spielberg in 1981. The Jurassic World franchise has now grossed $6.02 billion globally.

Jurassic World: Dominion was released in theaters in June, so it did take the movie some time to reach the $1 billion mark. Within the first two weeks of its release, it surpassed $500 million and had grossed over $600 million by the month’s end. It did very well globally as theaters begin to recover from the pandemic.

Another factor in the movie’s success was that it was released in China, a market that is increasingly difficult to penetrate. It grossed $158 million in Chinese sales, which makes it third for box office in China, behind Hobbs & Shaw, also a Universal release, and Warner Bros.’ Godzilla vs. Kong. These figures are also from a theater industry that is seeing a resurgence after a Covid-induced hiatus.

Jurassic World: Dominion also helped Universal set a record in that the studio is the first to exceed $3 billion in total earnings since 2019. This increase also reflects how movie distribution was affected by the pandemic without theaters being open. It is only the third film to reach the $1 billion mark since 2019, the others being Top Gun: Maverick and Spider-Man: No Way Home. It is second to Top Gun for 2022, which also indicates that more people are visiting theaters this year.

Forbes also posits that unlike its box office competition in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the success of the Jurassic World series is a result of its relatable characters. Rather than superpowered or magical beings, the movie stars regular people in regular professions, such as zoologists, environmental activists, military veterans, and scientists. By placing these people in situations with overwhelming odds, the story Jurassic World tells becomes compelling because viewers can see themselves in these everyday professions.

Jurassic World: Dominion is available on BluRay and is purchasable digitally. It can also be streamed with a subscription to Peacock, along with the rest of the movies in the Jurassic World series.
