It has been a decade since we got a movie with Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) and Hugh Jackman (Logan). The two have had plenty of interaction on social media that has been wild and hilarious, but getting the two on the big screen has not been seen in quite some time. Director Shawn Levy has worked with both of them as he did 2011’s Real Steel with Jackman and is now promoting Free Guy with Reynolds. In an interview with Comicbook.com, the filmmaker went into the possibility of making Real Steel 2 that featured both actors.

Levy revealed that he and the Australian actor have not stopped thinking about Real Steel and a possible sequel; even last week, they met and talked about doing it. If anything were to happen, Levy wants to put Ryan Reynolds with the first film’s lead. This could be the perfect combination as Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s interactions together on social media already get people giddy, so a blockbuster movie would be huge.

The sci-fi movie Real Steel is 10 years old, so where is the renewed love coming from? Netflix is the answer. The streaming giant put Real Steel on its platform last year, and it has become one of its biggest hits. That sudden surge in popularity struck up these conversations for a sequel and leading to bringing Ryan Reynolds into the mix.

Over the years, teases and updates have popped up regarding another movie. In 2016, the director told Collider that a sequel for Real Steel was being discussed. Due to positive test screenings, they knew that doing another movie in this universe with Hugh Jackman would be a great idea. So, six months before the release, plans were being drawn up. As far as we know, those early plans did not include Ryan Reynolds. The phase of planning out a sequel stopped with the issue being around the story. Levy did not want to redo what was done before. It is common for sequels to not bring anything new and retell the narrative from the previous installment.

It might not have had Ryan Reynolds, but Real Steel had quite the cast. Hugh Jackman led with his co-star Anthony Mackie (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), Evangeline Lilly (Ant-Man and the Wasp), and Kevin Durand (The Strain). At this point, director Shawn Levy was growing his career, previously having helmed Night at the Museum and its sequel, Battle of the Smithsonian, quite a few years before he became a bigger name for Stranger Things and producing Denis Villeneuve’s (Dune) Arrival. The film was written by John Gatins (Kong: Skull Island), Dan Gilroy (Velvet Buzzsaw), and Jeremy Leven (The Notebook).

Who knows if we will ever get a Real Steel sequel. Trending on Netflix is nice, and the director and the two actors are all huge now, so as Shawn Levy told Inverse, “never say never.” For now, he is promoting Free Guy as it hits theaters on August 13 with Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), Joe Keery (Stranger Things), and Lil Rel Howery (Get Out).
