Ryan Reynolds might just own all of the franchises when it is all said and done. His biggest one is gearing up for a major return in the next few years, and we have word now that another movie he is starring in is getting a sequel as well. And this one hasn’t even hit theaters yet. We Got This Covered has it that there is already discussion about a second Free Guy movie despite the first releasing next month. It is good to be Ryan Reynolds these days.

Free Guy is set to hit theaters on August 13th and will star Ryan Reynolds as an oblivious NPC in a video game. He lives a very ho-hum life despite the video game world around him being continually blasted to smithereens in typical game fashion. This dude, simply known as Guy, couldn’t care less, feeling like his existence is just a completely normal one.

But Ryan Reynolds as Guy has his world upended when Jodie Comer as Millie literally opens his eyes to the world around him. This red pill/ blue pill moment gives Guy the increasing ability to control the world around him, removing the controls in such a way that will help defeat the game creator who wants to shut the whole thing down. It has a comedic-Matrix feel to it from the trailers, with Ryan Reynolds apparently lending his devil-may-care nonchalant bravado to a movie that could end up being a blockbuster

It is this latter part, an expected significant return in box office dollars that is likely driving the sequel talk this early. Because the film is PG-13, it is likely to draw a significant family crowd to the theater, and Ryan Reynolds is about as big a draw as there is these days. It may have been a long time coming, but if it pays off then this could end up being one of the bigger movies of the summer. Early reactions to the film are quite positive.

Ryan Reynolds was originally supposed to release Free Guy back in July of 2020. But the Covid-19 pandemic and movie theater closings pushed the opening back over a year. The movie is under the Disney studios umbrella, having come over when they purchased 20th Century Fox. It was just one of the many in-development movies at the time.

Of course, Free Guy wasn’t the only Ryan Reynolds 20th Century Fox title to make its way over to Disney. The other one is Deadpool which is set to turn the Marvel Cinematic Universe on its head. The first two movies in the franchise were as R-rated as they come, pulling no punches on any front from the graphics to the language to the sexual innuendo. These movies don’t exactly scream Disney which has left many wondering how the character would work his way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There is a sense they will continue the same tone, but that remains to be seen.

Ryan Reynolds is a fixture at Disney right now and it looks like he will have multiple movies in the works for some time. If Free Guy gets a sequel, and there is a good chance it does simply on name alone, he would be gearing up for multiple blockbusters over the next few years.
