Arnold Schwarzenegger hinted at a mysterious new role on Twitter today. The pic shared by the Austrian actor/body builder/ former governor/ Terminator shows him with a lustrous mane of white hair, an impressive cascading beard and golden armor breastplate. Also, he appears to be commanding the power of lightning itself with his hands. Below Schwarzenegger is a text reading “ZEUS” and shadowy Grecian-style columns and a throne. So whatever it is, it appears that he will be taking on the role of the mythological Greco-Roman god in some capacity. Given that his film resume has encompassed barbarians, super spies and killer robots of various levels of heroism, it’s almost surprising that he has not played an actual divinity yet. Check out the image below:
Odds are that Arnold Schwarzenegger is appearing as Zeus in some kind of Super Bowl commercial. The image he posted has a faint “FEBRUARY 2022” at the very bottom, which would put it right in the time frame. And of course, Super Bowl commercials have been as important to American cultural identity as the actual sporting event for decades now. Given that Schwarzenegger has developed into something of an elder statesman of culture more than just an actor or celebrity, it makes sense that he would fit into the role of the dignified yet musclebound father of Ares, Athena, and a bunch of other mythological figures. The Super Bowl has managed such feats as convincing Hugo Weaving to step back into the black suit and sunglasses for a General Electric ad and making Jason Momoa not hot, they could definitely wrangle Schwarzenegger.
In recent years, Arnold Schwarzenegger has mostly stepped back from acting roles. His last major film was 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate, which received mixed reviews. It was not a box-office failure by any means, but considering the expectations held on one of the most influential and highest-grossing sci-fi franchises out there, it was generally considered a disappointment. His personal life has also suffered in recent years, with his long-pending divorce from Maria Shriver being finalized in December 2021. Schwarzenegger’s personal image was heavily tarnished in the 2010s with the revelation of his having fathered a child out of wedlock during his marriage. His son Joseph Baena has since developed a relationship with his famous father, though it has reportedly not always been easy.
It seems that Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to return to one of his earlier successes (other than the Terminator franchise). After three decades of development hell, Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito are making a sequel to their hit 1988 film Twins. Titled Triplets, the new film will be directed by Ivan Reitman and add Tracy Morgan to the mismatched sibling group. The original movie had a high concept premise that asked the question, “what if a very large man was the twin brother of a very small man?” So presumably Triplets will continue on with that basic idea. After Reitman’s success with a long delayed sequel to Coming to America for Amazon Prime, it seems Schwarzenegger is getting in good with that 1980s revival action.
