Gillian Anderson Battles Robot Overlords In This Crazy New Trailer

By Brent McKnight | Updated

When you come across a movie full of names like Sir Ben Kingsley and Gillian Anderson involved, but that you’ve never heard a squeak about, it always gives you pause. In most cases it’s because the film in question isn’t very good, but you always have to have hope, right? And such is the case with the upcoming Robot Overlords, a crazy looking sci-fi joint featuring both of those folks. For just a taste of what you’re in for, check out this new trailer.

As you very likely guessed from the title of this film, this is set in a world where Earth has been taken over by, you got it, an army of robot overlords from space. And as you can also see from this video, there’s all kinds of crazy action in play, as well as massive mechanoid rulers stomping around like gangly ED-209s. But that’s not all that’s going on. There are secrets, some humans are obviously in cahoots with our new oppressors, and, of course, there’s a chosen one with newfangled powers who spends a lot of time with one hand raised and pointed at the bad guys.

Here is the official synopsis:

Earth has been conquered by robots from a distant galaxy; survivors are confined to their houses and must wear electronic implants, risking incineration by robot sentries if they venture outside.

In robot-occupied Britain, city centres are devastated and a gang of teenagers live in a seaside town constantly under robot threat. Intimidating sentries patrol the streets; snipers are merciless death machines. The Mediator is deceptively childlike but unnervingly coercive. The robot base is The Cube, a massive mother-ship that dominates the horizon.

Robot OverlordsRobot Overlords looks cheap and cheesy and schlocky, but also like it might be a total blast. And if that logo at the beginning of this video looks familiar, or gives you hope that this could be awesome, that’s because it comes from the Shaw Organization, which is related to Shaw Brothers Studios, who are responsible for some of the most batshit insane martial arts films of all time (watch Boxer’s Omen if you need proof of this). So lets hope that some of that has rubbed off on this project and they just roll with the crazy.

Directed by Joe Wright (Grabbers), Robot Overlords has a U.K. release date set for March 19, 2015, though we’ll have to wait and see how this makes the rounds for the rest of the world.
