Of all the movies action star Steven Seagal has made, by far his highest-rated movie is Under Siege. This Seagal flick, sometimes referred to as Die Hard on the seas, is now available to be seen on the super steamer Netflix.
Under Siege introduces Steven Seagal as Casey Ryback, a Naval officer and cook assigned to the USS Missouri. The battleship is set to be decommissioned in California, so the ship is being prepared to sail. Going against the order of his Executive Officer Commander Krill (a crazy Gary Busey), Ryback is preparing meals for the birthday celebration of Commanding Officer Captain Adams (Patrick O’Neal).
Krill has plans to bring in food and entertainment of his own, so he provokes Ryback into a brawl. Unable to send Ryback to the brig without the okay from Captain Adams, Krill instead forces Ryback into the skip’s freezer, placing a guard at the door.
Krill’s food and entertainment arrive which includes Playboy Playmate Jordan Tate (played by Erika Eleniak, who actually was a Playboy Playmate), a musical band, and a group caterers who, we quickly find out, are actually mercenaries with bad intentions and are being led by ex-CIA operative Bill Strannix (Tommy Lee Jones).
Strannix, along with his mercenaries, takes over the ship, killing several officers, including Captain Adams. Of course, they have Krill to thank as he was the inside man doing much of the dirty work. Strannix and Krill’s plan is to sell off the navy ship’s Tomahawk missiles as revenge for the CIA trying to assassinate him for events that happened earlier in his career.
What Strannix and Krill weren’t counting on was Ryback, who talked his guard into letting him out. Unfortunately, as he does, the guard is killed by Stannix’s men, but Ryback is able to take them out himself. Turns out, Ryback is a former Navy Seal with skills on top of skills. During his own escape, he finds Tate, who had been sedated during the takeover.
With Tate in tow, Ryback is now on a mission to save the remaining living soldiers as well as derail Strannix and Krill’s plans. Krill forces Ryback into action when he activates the ship’s fire suppression system, causing the ship’s forecastle, where the survivors are being held, to fill with water. Krill’s intent is to ambush Ryback.
Ryback is ready and willing for anything, as a highly trained Navy Seal should be. Using every skill he possesses, Ryback expertly combats the terrorists and saves his fellow soldiers. But Strannix and Krill aren’t done with Ryback. Unfortunately for them, Ryback is not done with them either.
Under Siege represents one of Steven Seagal’s best movies. Seagal made his presence known in Hollywood with his initial effort Above the Law, showcasing his brand of martial arts with bone-breaking glory, turning his first film into an early career that included Hard to Kill, Marked for Death, and Out for Justice.
Andrew Davis directed Seagal from a script by J. F. Lawton. Davis made the movie for $35 million and reaped the rewards as it unexpectedly brought in nearly $157 million at the box office.
Steven Seagal went on to film On Deadly Ground after Under Siege then attempted to recreate his Under Siege magic with the 1995 movie Under Siege 2: Dark Territory, which also starred a very young Katherine Heigl. While some feel the sequel is underrated, it didn’t receive the critical love his first Under Siege movie got.
Steven Seagal continued to crank out movies in the late ‘90s. He was in Executive Decision, The Glimmer Man, Fire Down Below, and The Patriot. But once his career his 2002, his movies began to go the direct-to-video route. In fact, every movie that Seagal has starred in since that time has gone straight to video.
Even though he has taken the direct-to-video route, Steven Seagal has not slowed down making films. The 69-year-old actor continues to crank out action movie after action movie, his last one being the 2019 crime thriller Beyond the Law.
His professional life has not been without its share of alleged misconduct. Seagal has been accused numerous times of sexual misconduct from Warner Bros. employees to Jenny McCarthy during her audition for Under Siege 2: Dark Territory to the 2017 allegation brought on by actress Portia de Rossi. These are just a few of the sexual misconduct allegations brought on to Seagal throughout his movie career.
Somehow, throughout it all, Steven Seagal continues to make movies. His next film will be the direct-to-video actioner The Tip of the Spear and then it appears Seagal plans to go back to where it all started 31 years ago when he plans on bringing back Nico Toscani in the sequel to Above the Law.
If you’re looking for a good popcorn action movie, Steven Seagal’s Under Siege won’t disappoint and Netflix has it for you.
