The Fate Of Reservation Dogs Has Been Decided

Reservation Dogs has been renewed for a third season.

With a long slate of hit series including The Bear, What We Do in the Shadows, and Under the Banner of Heaven, FX is certainly holding their own. And to continue their run as one of the top watched networks in television, as reported by Deadline, they’ve announced their plans to renew the smash comedy drama, Reservation Dogs for what will be the show’s third season. While the news isn’t shocking as the Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi created project has been a fan favorite since its first season, it’s especially exciting as the second season has yet to bow out, with the finale airing on September 28.

Taking place in a rural pocket of Oklahoma, Reservation Dogs is a coming-of-age tale centered around its leading characters Elora Danan (Devery Jacobs), Bear Smallhill (D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai), Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis) and Cheese (Lane Factor). The most recent season saw the group of four reeling from the death of their fifth member. In hopes of following through with their late friend’s dreams of leaving the state of Oklahoma to start anew in sunny California, the gang lied, cheated and stole their way into making a quick buck. But, as it seems to always be the case with this cast of characters, things quickly go screwy, leaving each member to strike out on their own.

The Hulu and FX series is truly one-of-a-kind as it tells its story by using an all-Native team of writers, directors, and main actors. This is something that Reservation Dogs co-creator Harjo takes a particular pride in. In a statement released with the renewal announcement, Harjo said that he was incredibly “proud” of the story that he created with the show’s cast, crew, and Waititi.

Giving readers some backstory, Harjo explained that Reservation Dogs was dreamt up during a chat between he and Waititi in “Taika’s kitchen”. If only we could’ve been a fly on the wall during that – or any of the duo’s conversations. Calling the support they’ve been feeling surrounding the ongoing second season “outstanding,” Harjo thanked FX for giving them more time to tell their “laughter and love” filled story to audiences everywhere.

Aside from Reservation Dogs, it’s been a busy and fruitful year for Taika Waititi who not only starred in HBO’s Our Flag Means Death, but was also heard in the summer’s hottest animated feature, Lightyear. One of the most beloved directors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Waititi also dropped the highly anticipated Thor: Love and Thunder over the summer. Another hit for not only the studio, but also for the filmmaker, sadly it sounds as though it will be his final Thor centered piece, considering recent reports that he won’t be returning to the franchise.

As for the future of Reservation Dogs, we can’t wait to see where the writers take us. A Golden Globe nominated series, upon watching just one episode, it’s easy to see why FX quickly pushed a third season renewal on the project. As of right now, no specific premiere date has been set, but it’s expected to land exclusively on Hulu at some point in 2023.
