Any film from acclaimed director Christoper Nolan is going to be an event, and the upcoming Oppenheimer looks to be no different. The cast is absolutely stacked with stars, including Cillian Murphy in the lead role as J. Robert Oppenheimer himself. Matt Damon and Emily Blunt are also set to play prominent roles and recent set pictures have been shared on Twitter, giving us a first look at their characters.

Matt Damon plays Lieutenant General Leslie Richard Groves Jr., who was the director of the Manhattan Project. The scene below depicts the moment in Oppenheimer’s life where he received the Army-Navy “E” Award. This award was given to facilities that made outstanding production efforts to provide war equipment during World War II. Check out the Tweet and the set photos below:

While Matt Damon is playing the director of the Manhattan Project, the movie is clearly going to belong to Cillian Murphy, who plays the more well-known J. Robert Oppenheimer, one of the scientists who contributed to the project, leading to the invention of the atomic bomb. In the wake of the atomic bomb’s destruction potential, Oppenheimer famously regretted his invention and struggled with the moral implications for the rest of his life. His moral quandary was famously encapsulated with his quote “Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” This quote from the Bhagavad-Gita is what first came to mind for Oppenheimer when he witnessed the detonation of the first atomic bomb on July 16, 1945.

In addition to Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon, and Emily Blunt, Oppenheimer has a cast-list of A-listers a mile long. The other stars in the movie include Florence Pugh, Kenneth Branagh, Robert Downey Jr., Josh Hartnett, Rami Malek, Josh Peck, Dane Dehaan, and many more. The movie is based on Oppenheimer’s life and the book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. Christoper Nolan takes on directing duties along with the screenplay adaptation.

Nolan is known for re-using his actors in his movies, with Michael Caine and Cillian Murphy playing supporting roles quite frequently. Though Caine won’t be making an appearance in this one, Oppenheimer will make the first time Nolan is putting Murphy squarely at the center. This will be the second collaboration between Matt Damon and Nolan after he made a brief appearance in Interstellar. Stars like Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt will be making their first foray into the Nolanverse. Oppenheimer also marks Nolan’s departure from his long-time relationship with Warner Bros. Instead, this movie will be distributed by Universal.

Though Nolan has depicted real-world events before in Dunkirk, this will be his first proper biopic. Undoubtedly, it won’t be as straightforward as the typical biopic, since Nolan isn’t really known for playing it straight, no matter what the subject matter is. It’ll be exciting to see what Christoper Nolan, Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, and the rest of the cast have in store for us when Oppenheimer hits theaters in the Summer of 2023.
