What is Robert Downey Jr.’s career going to look like, post-Tony Stark? Before he played Iron Man, his public image was in an uncomfortable place. It isn’t a stretch to say that his experience working with Marvel revolutionized his career. Now that he’s made such an impressive name for himself, what does he want to do? He’s been working as a producer on a number of series, including the Netflix hit Sweet Tooth. In interviews, he’s flopped around a bit on whether he’ll ever return to Marvel as Iron Man, eventually saying, “Never say never.” His current big acting project is Oppenheimer, the next movie fans are expecting from filmmaker Christopher Nolan. From what we’re hearing, that project may be an inspiring one for the actor.
A trusted and proven inside source for Giant Freakin Robot has shared that Robert Downey Jr. is currently in talks for Christopher Nolan’s next movie, the one he’ll be doing after Oppenheimer. It’s interesting that these two are already talking about working together again, but not altogether shocking. Nolan is one of the filmmakers with a history of working with some of the same talent on multiple projects; Michael Caine is a prime example of this. Robert Downey Jr. has worked with some filmmakers, like Shane Black, more than once.
However, it’s still very early in their relationship. Oppenheimer hasn’t started filming yet, it’s expected to do so this year in New Mexico. This may mean a couple of things. For one thing, it suggests that the talks between Robert Downey Jr. and Christopher Nolan are still in their early stages. We were able to confirm that the two are talking about this next project, but that doesn’t mean that the talks will be successful. It means that so far, the two are interested enough to be having the conversation.
We wish we could confirm more of the specifics about what they’re discussing. Would Robert Downey Jr. play the lead in this next Christopher Nolan movie? Or will he be taking on a smaller part? Is there a specific role they’re talking about?
These talks also suggest that Christopher Nolan is going to move rather quickly from Oppenheimer to his next movie. At least, quickly for him. There are certainly filmmakers who move much faster. James Gunn has hopped from The Suicide Squad to Peacemaker to Guardians of the Galaxy 3 in the time Nolan has spent preparing for Oppenheimer. However, in the past, Nolan has liked to set a slower pace, with fairly large gaps between releases. Everything we’ve been hearing about his conversations with stars like Robert Downey Jr. makes it sound like he’s ready to move quickly from Oppenheimer to whatever his next project is.
With production set to start on Oppenheimer this year, Christopher Nolan and Robert Downey Jr. should have plenty more time to see how they enjoy working together and make some decisions on these talks. Hopefully more info on the next Nolan project will be announced soon, but that news may not come until after Oppenheimer’s release in 2023.
