Despite seeming too crazy even for this mad, mad world, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie is set for release on July 21, 2023. Many have wondered what a live-action movie based on the iconic toy would be like, and a recent trailer gives us a brief glimpse of this. However, the real star of this teaser trailer is Margot Robbie showing off her legs in a sexy swimsuit!

While the trailer eventually gives us a glimpse of Barbie’s kaleidoscopic world, the trailer begins as a weird parody of 2001: A Space Odyssey. We see children playing with dolls, but as the narrator explains, they are disappointed that these are simply baby dolls. We then see Margot Robbie as Barbie towering over these children and showing them how cool a doll based on an adult woman can be.

Interestingly, our first glimpse of Margot Robbie as Barbie shows her wearing a vintage striped swimsuit. This swimsuit has fans going gaga for Robbie’s legs (which, to be fair, are quite spectacular). Of course, classic Barbie fans are going gaga for a different reason: Robbie is wearing the same striped swimsuit that Mattel’s first Barbie ever wore.

It seems the Margot Robbie Barbie we see at the beginning of this trailer is different from the one we get in the rest of the movie. For example, in the scenes later in the trailer, we don’t see Barbie towering over anyone else like the 50-foot woman. Instead, the tongue-in-cheek teaser trailer emphasizes Barbie’s outsize cultural influence, right down to little girls destroying or tossing away their old toys in favor of this new one.

It’s only in the last 10 seconds of the teaser trailer that we get a glimpse at the actual world of the film. First, we see Margot Robbie as Barbie imperiously waving to an entire neighborhood of pink dream houses. Next, we see a blonde Ryan Gosling and allies in some sort of sports competition before shifting to characters in different scenes cheering and dancing (including Shang-Chi star Simu Liu).

Not that long ago, movies like this were either mindless toy commercials aimed at children or tepid nostalgia fests aimed at their parents. But with director Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird, Little Women) directing and a script from both her and Marriage Story director Noah Baumbach (who is also Gerwig’s boyfriend), this Margot Robbie Barbie movie looks like it might surprise us all. And it may even be a sign that Mattel hopes to revitalize interest in their iconic toy even as they have focused recently on reviving other classic toy lines such as He-Man and G.I. Joe.

Even if Barbie ends up being a complete flop, the real winner is likely to be Margot Robbie. While she has had immense success as an actor, she has been creatively tied to the DC movies for some time now. And even though she seems safe for the moment from James Gunn shaking things up, she may have learned an important lesson from Henry Cavill’s recent troubles: don’t put all your eggs in one basket, especially if that basket is owned by Warner Bros!
