After the success of Knives Out in 2019, the Agatha Christie influenced murder mystery franchise was involved in a multi-million dollar bidding war between the major streaming services, with Netflix coming out on top with a $450 million dollar offer. All that is to say that yes, Knives Out 3 is happening, and yes, it will be a sequel to Glass Onion, but it won’t be anytime soon. Franchise creator Rian Johnson, in an interview with The Direct, says that he is “just starting to figure out what the next one is going to be.”

Knives Out 3 will be third movie in the franchise, and the last one under the current deal with Netflix following Glass Onion. Johnson’s feelings are that “I see it as an ongoing thing. As long as Daniel and I are having fun and coming up with something new and exciting every time, we’ll keep doing this as long as we can.”

The Daniel in Johnson’s quote is Daniel Craig, the former James Bond actor that portrays detective Benoit Blanc. Knives Out 3, when it does happen, will again feature Craig’s investigator, promising to dig deeper into his background, which started in Glass Onion with the reveal of his partner, Philip, played by Hugh Grant. Other stars that took part in the latest ensemble include Edward Norton, Janelle Monea, Kathryn Hahn, Dave Bautista, Leslie Odom Jr., Kate Hudson, and a post-humous cameo from the legendary Angela Lansbury.

Creator Rian Johnson on going beyond a trilogy: “I see it as an ongoing thing. As long as Daniel and I are having fun and coming up with something new and exciting every time, we’ll keep doing this as long as we can”

Knives Out 3 will likely follow the trend of Glass Onion by bringing Craig’s Benoit Blanc to a new location, continuing to surround the southern detective with a fresh group of eccentric characters. Rian Johnson is focusing on his growing murder mystery franchise over Star Wars, with his expected trilogy of movies being put on hold, potentially replaced by a streaming Disney+ series. With how successful the classic mystery themed franchise is doing, Johnson going back to a galaxy far, far away seems less likely with each blockbuster hit.

Within days of debuting on Netflix, and setting a high bar for Knives Out 3 to clear, Glass Onion is already the top trending movie on Netflix. The sequel arrived three years after the original Jamie Lee Curtis and Ana De Armas starring Knives Out, though it was significantly delayed by the COVID pandemic. With no pandemic related delays, and Daniel Craig free of his James Bond obligations, the third film could arrive much sooner to Netflix.

In a move that the streaming service will repeat for Knives Out 3, Glass Onion was granted a limited theatrical release in November in 600 cinemas nationwide. While Netflix has not released any figures, The Hollywood Reporter estimated the film made $13 million, good enough for third place behind Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Strange World. Glass Onion is currently streaming on Netflix, and fans can rest easy knowing that the further adventures of Daniel Craig’s detective will be coming in just a few years, if not sooner.
