Fox’s fan-favorite series Glee was dramatic enough, but a new docuseries plans to pull the curtain back and reveal the real-life drama happening behind the scenes. The yet-to-be-titled project will be coming to audiences courtesy of Discovery+ and ID, who most recently drew in viewers with The House of Hammer, their telling of the troubling allegations against Armie Hammer.

Between mean girl rumors surrounding series star Lea Michele, and the tragedies that claimed the lives of Cory Monteith and Naya Rivera, the series promises to dive into it all.

Over a six-season run, with more than 100 episodes, the musical comedy followed the lives of the glee club at the fictional William McKinley High School. The chorus’ members came from various backgrounds and with the help of their instructor, Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison), were able to bridge their divides.

The Glee documentary will uncover the real differences between the actors using those closest to the action – the cast and crew members – who will share their accounts of what really took place on set.

Behind the happy song and dance action playing out on screen, several of those who held leading roles in Glee were harboring dark secrets, something the documentary will shed light on. Monteith was sadly struggling with a drug addiction that would tragically cut his life short when he accidentally overdosed on heroin.

Perhaps the most shocking and disturbing secret held by a member of the cast was that of Mark Salling who was arrested and ultimately pleaded guilty to holding photos depicting child sex abuse. Before he could be sentenced, Salling would take his own life.

Tragedy would once again befall a cast member when in 2020, Naya Rivera passed away in an accidental drowning incident, bravely saving her son before losing her own life. The Glee documentary will also look into the allegations against Lea Michele, with several of her ex-castmates speaking negatively about their time with her on the set.

In 2020, following the murder of George Floyd, Michele spoke out as an advocate for Black Lives Matter, something her ex-costar Samantha Ware called her out on after allegeding that she had experienced racism from Michele while the two worked together on the series.

While we don’t know who will make their voices and experiences heard in the Glee documentary, the series also starred Jane Lynch, Jayma Mays, Dianna Agron, Chris Colfer, Jessalyn Gilsig, Kevin McHale, Amber Riley, Jenna Ushkowitz, Heather Morris, Darren Criss, and Melissa Benoist.

It’s also unclear as to whether we’ll hear from the minds behind the production: Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan. The trio have continued to work with Michele following their time with her on Glee, so it will be interesting to hear what they may have to say should they appear.

Now that they’ve been incredibly successful in creating true-crime-related programming, it seems as though Discovery+ and ID are ready to hit another high note with the Glee docuseries. With the drama and tragedies surrounding the franchise and the public fascination with the cast continuing all these years later, there’s no time like the present to reveal it all. And let’s be real, who doesn’t love a real life, page turner – or in this case – binge-able series?
