Adaptable, witty, and a veritable dreamboat with impeccable comedic timing, Ryan Reynolds is a satirical tour de force, the kind that hasn’t been seen since the likes of 90s everyman Jim Carrey. Not only is Reynolds a master of improv, but he also commands every scene he’s in and has pretty much perfected the archetypal Hollywood douchebag with a heart of gold. There’s nothing this wisecracking chameleon hasn’t done — besides, perhaps, working with another beloved Hollywood chameleon. Enter the aforementioned Jim Carrey. The Ontario native practically embodies a “loveable douchebag,” and has been carrying the mantle long before Reynolds came into the picture. There’s no better team-up than getting these two to collaborate on a project. According to celebrity insider Daniel Richtman, Jim Carrey is working on a superhero comedy-musical with Ryan Reynolds. It’s hard to think of an odder, yet more fitting pairing.

Unfortunately, that’s all the details we have on this potential hero musical, so take it with a grain of salt. This is the second time Jim Carrey was rumored to be collaborating with Reynolds. He was recently attached to play the villain in Deadpool 3 though those specifics haven’t been ironed out either.

If it’s true, then the film would be the third superhero comedy for Jim Carrey after 1994’s The Mask and 2013’s Kick-Ass 2 — not counting his turn as the Riddler in the poorly received Batman Forever, of course. Like Reynolds, Carrey has dabbled in pretty much everything from drama to every sub-genre of comedy imaginable and is hardly a newcomer to superhero and fantasy movies.

While not an action star in the same vein as Reynolds, Jim Carrey is known for playing quirky characters and has completely transformed himself time and again to make roles entirely his own. Fair to say matching up to Reynolds’s broad, leather-covered shoulders would be a cinch. And just to add more weight to the idea, Carrey also starred in a film called The Dead Pool way back in 1988. Considering Reynolds plays the Merc with a Mouth, it all fits. And while Carrey isn’t known for any singing roles, Reynolds was just cast in a musical retelling of Charles Dickens’s The Christmas Carol entitled Spirited. A superhero musical might just work.

Jim Carrey isn’t as active in the biz in recent years, but has made a dramatic comeback playing Dr. Robotnik in the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog. He has also returned to his jocular roots, reprising the role of Lloyd Christmas in Dumber and Dumber To and parodying U.S. President Joe Biden in Saturday Night Live.

Unlike Jim Carrey, Ryan Reynolds, on the other hand, has been busy. With five films coming out and more in pre-production, it’s no surprise Reynolds was recently named Hollywood’s second-highest-paid megastar. He was last seen voicing a cave-boy named Guy in The Croods: A New Age, and will be appearing as the titular Guy (yes, Guy again) in Free Guy this year. He’s also set to reprise the role of Michael Bryce in The Hitman’s Bodyguard’s aptly named sequel, The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard. Two other Reynolds films — Hotel Transylvania: Transformania with Adam Sandler and Red Notice, with Gal Gadot and fellow highest-paid actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson — will be hitting theaters around the same time.

The 44-year-old shows no signs of slowing down, however, and has signed on in six more films: time-traveling epic The Adam Project, Spirited, Paramount’s Imaginary Friends with John Krasinski, the Netflix adaptation of popular arcade game Dragon’s Lair, and the John August-led Upstate, monster movie Everyday Parenting Tips. Of course, there’s also his hotly anticipated turn as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s fourth-wall-breaking anti-hero, Deadpool. He’s also rumored to headline a live-action Thundercats, star in a Pirates of the Caribbean spinoff, play the next Sherlock Holmes, and join the cast of Disney’s The Mandalorian. There’s no stopping this man from knocking more masterpieces out of the park, least of all an ongoing pandemic.

Could there be a film with Jim Carrey and Ryan Reynolds crooning and crimefighting? It’s looking like a distinct possibility and would be a near-perfect match.
