Ewan McGregor Talks About A Star Wars Spin-off For Obi-Wan Kenobi

Recently, the latest news coming out of the Lucasfilm camp regarding Star Wars dealt with the spinoff stand-alone movies. The possibilities are endless. George Lucas created a vast universe with many solid characters that the stand-alone movies could virtually feature any Star Wars character at its center. It’s only a question of where to begin.
In an interview with MTV, Ewan McGregor spoke about possibly returning to the Star Wars universe to reprise his iconic role as Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. Since McGregor is considerably younger than his older counterpart Alec Guinness, who played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original Star Wars trilogy, he would have to play the Jedi Master while in exile on Tatooine before A New Hope. McGregor explains,
I think it’s a good idea. The only bit that I could get away with doing is after the last one I made, ‘Episode III,’ before Alec Guinness, there’s that period where he’s in the desert.
That might be my window, there, to tell that story. I don’t know what he did in the desert. We could make up some stuff. Could be quite exciting. I’d be up for it, for sure, of course.
How exciting could this time period be for Obi-Wan Kenobi? Spanning about 20 years after Revenge of the Sith, Kenobi spent this time training with Qui-Gon Jinn’s ghost to learn the secrets of becoming a Jedi ghost. Perhaps he got into a few scrapes with Tusken Raiders and Jawas, but this time for Obi-Wan Kenobi had to be low key so he wouldn’t be discovered by the Galactic Empire.
A few weeks ago, rumors arose when it was revealed that the Jedi Master Yoda might be at the center of the first Star Wars stand-alone movie. Those rumors were later debunked when Disney and Lucasfilm stated that they were merely “kicking around ideas.” Legendary voice actor and puppeteer Frank Oz was also willing to reprise his role as Yoda if the project continued to develop.
As of this post, Disney has not confirmed that any Star Wars stand-alone movie is in development, but Disney CEO Bob Iger has stated that there will be new Star Wars movies that are not part of the new sequel trilogy.
