Accidents and mishaps can sometimes happen on film and TV sets, but it’s not often that you witness a shootout. However, that’s exactly what happened to Timothy Olyphant and the crew of Justified City: Primeval when they were filming a scene in Chicago. Deadline reported on Olyphant’s appearance on the podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, where Olyphant told Conan that he saw one of the cars involved in the shooting and that one gunman had a modified pistol and the other was shooting out of the top of the car with a machine gun.

Timothy Olyphant talked about how the next day was pretty emotional and that he suggested shutting down production saying, “We were supposed to shoot the next night in another bad part of town,” adding “I feel like I should speak up.” It certainly sounds like it was a pretty scary experience, but fortunately, none of the cast and crew were hurt in the shootout. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the only violent incident that the cast and crew had to deal with.

Just three weeks after those cars crashed through the barriers blocking the set to engage in a shootout, an incendiary device was thrown toward the set. The device did not go off and no one was hurt, but two incidents are a lot for a cast and crew to go through. Justified: City Primeval is done filming at this point, so hopefully, Timothy Olyphant and the other cast and crew members won’t have to see any more shootouts on set in the future.

Justified: City Primeval sees Timothy Olyphant reprising his role as U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, a role that Olyphant played for many years in the hit FX series Justified. Justified: City Primeval takes place seven years later and sees Raylan leaving Miami to hunt down a serial killer in Detroit, only this time he’ll have to balance being a father with his martial duties. Raylan’s daughter Willa is played by Olyphant’s real-life daughter Vivian.

Justified: City Primeval cribs from the Elmore Leonard novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit. Dave Adron and Michael Dinner are on board as showrunners for the eight-episode miniseries, with Dinner also directing. Along with Timothy Olyphant, the cast includes Boyd Holbrook, Aunjanue Ellis, Adelaide Clemens, Vondie Curtis Hall, Marin Ireland, Norbert Leo Butz, Victor Williams, Vivian Olyphant, and Ravi Patel.

Timothy Olyphant’s Raylan Givens faced off with plenty of shady characters during his tenure in Kentucky, but Boyd Holbrook’s Clement Mansell should prove to be a worthy antagonist. Mansel is also known as the Oklahoma Wildman. It’ll be interesting to see how Raylan takes down Mansell when he’s out of his element in Detroit.

There’s no official release date yet for Justified: City Primeval, but it’s expected to come out sometime in mid-2023. The miniseries will air on FX, so we’ll keep you updated on when you can expect to see the series premiere. In the meantime, you can see Timothy Olyphant in the recent David O. Russell film Amsterdam and in the Disney+ series The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.
