Season 3 of The Mandalorian is just a few weeks away, but as if the new trailer and plot hints haven’t gotten fans excited enough, the official Twitter account shared an amazing image with one very interesting detail. In a galaxy far, far away few weapons are more dangerous than the Lightsaber of a Jedi Knight. Few warriors are as dangerous as a Mandalorian, but what does it look like when the two are put together?

Pedro Pascal stars in The Mandalorian as the titular character alongside his charge, Grogu, a young child of the same species as Yoda and Yaddle. While the Mandalorian has demonstrated no capability of utilizing the Force, he’s used many deadly weapons protecting Grogu from other bounty hunters and Moff Gideon, played by Giancarlo Esposito. In his hands at the end of season 2, and going into the new season, is the legendary Darksaber.

The Mandalorian highlights the unique lightsaber, created by the very first Mandalorian Jedi Master over a thousand years before the start of the show. In The Clone Wars the weapon made its first appearance in Star Wars media, wielded by Pre Vizsla, leader of the Death Watch. After losing a duel to Obi-Wan Kenobi, and failing to execute Ahsoka, Vizsla ended up in an uneasy alliance with the resurrected Darth Maul’s Shadow Collective.

Darth Maul ended up wielding the blade after murdering Pre Vizsla, leaving it on Dathomir before the Darksaber ended up in the rightful hands of a Mandalorian again. Through a long series of battles and dramatic rescues, Bo Katan-Kryze, played by Katee Sackhoff in The Mandalorian, held the blade before losing it in the Great Purge of Mandalore to Moff Gideon, the first live-action character to use the blade.

Originally, Darth Maul’s cameo at the end of Solo: A Star Wars Story was going to include the Darksaber but the lightsaber from Star Wars: Rebels was used instead. Disappointing to fans at the time, but the trade off for The Mandalorian focusing on the blade makes the wait worth it.

The Darksaber is a weapon of legendary status within the universe, and among fans of The Clone Wars, though until The Mandalorian it was left out of live-action media. The blade was intimidating in the hands of Moff Gideon but being used by Djin Djarin it just looks right. Exactly how the Darksaber will be utilized in the upcoming season is unknown, especially since the wielder of the blade is the rightful ruler of Mandalore.

That might be a problem since Djin Djarin broke the tenets of the Mandalorians and needs to redeem himself in the eyes of his people. According to the trailer for the upcoming season, that is exactly what he’s going to do in the first few episodes. After that, we know Moff Gideon is still around, but what comes next?

The Mandalorian has been a huge success for Disney and has revitalized the franchise after the dismal reception to Rise of Skywalker. No matter what happens with The Mandalorian and the Darksaber, millions of fans will be watching week to week in order to find out. Season 3 debuts February 1st on Disney+ with a new episode being released for the following seven weeks.
