DC Universe fans may want to pay attention: the Supergirl replacement has been selected—it’s Milly Alcock, known for her engaging and widely celebrated portrayal of Princess Rhaneyra in HBO’s hit series House of the Dragon

Milly Alcock As Supergirl

DC devotees should be able to sigh with relief, knowing James Gunn’s search for the new Supergirl has concluded with a familiar face. While nothing in show business is set in stone, expect Alcock to contribute a new depth to the iconic superheroine.

Overall, the casting decision should spark added interest in Gunn’s project and spike fan anticipation.

The fact that Gunn and company went with Milly Alcock for Supergirl testifies to her rising star in the acting world. After all, she bested several other big-name actresses, including Emilia Jones (of Locke & Key) and Meg Donnelly, who voiced Supergirl in prior projects.

Debuting In Superman: Legacy

Gunn himself, the visionary behind this new incarnation of the DC universe, confirmed the news, deeming Alcock a “fantastically talented young actor.”

Indeed, the British artist’s talent and undeniable presence make her an ideal pick for the significant role.

We can expect Milly Alcock to debut as Supergirl in Gunn’s upcoming Superman: Legacy.

The film is scheduled for a 2025 release. All of which positions Alcock to star in her own movie, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Details Still Unconfirmed

Still, details are technically unconfirmed. However, it’s widely speculated that Supergirl will appear in a DC Universe project before her standalone film. Superman: Legacy is of course the most likely candidate.

The studio head explained that the Tom King comics serve as Gunn’s inspiration for his vision of Supergirl. Interestingly, this interpretation offers a stark contrast to all the previous on-screen incarnations of the superhero.

A Darker Supergirl Character

We all know Superman’s backstory: he was raised by loving, Earthling parents on the farm—an enviable childhood conceivably.

But Milly Alcock’s version of Supergirl, named Carol, undergoes a harsher upbringing. She will have spent the first 14 years of her life surviving by a hair’s breadth on a fragment of Krypton, bearing witness to the death of everyone around her.

A more complex, nuanced, and decidedly darker Supergirl character should emerge from this backstory.

That said, fans have much to look forward to and high expectations, given Alcock’s impressive performance as a young, troubled Princess Rhaenyra in HBO’s streaming hit.

The actor has already proven her ability to play complex characters, embodying nuance and demonstrating skills beyond her years. DC heads should rest assured that Milly Alcock’s Supergirl will be compelling, or at least unique.

The DC Universe, or DCU, is a forthcoming media franchise and shared universe based on the legendary characters from decades of DC Comics publications. James Gunn and Peter Safran co-created the franchise, itself a soft reboot of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). This means DCU retains some choice players from DCEU—while nixing others.

The New DC

James Gunn

One of the singular hallmarks of DCU and James Gunn’s vision is its united continuity and story-spanning live-action films, animations, and video games. Anything diverging from this continual narrative arc is conveniently dubbed “DC Elseworlds.”

Ultimately, given she already has the flying experience, we’re pumped for Milly Alcock’s portrayal of Supergirl.
