Edge Of Tomorrow Trailer Screencaps Show Off The Aliens And The Exoskeletons

The latest trailer for Tom Cruise’s upcoming sci-fi/action fest Edge of Tomorrow hit the ‘net earlier this week and it continues to show potential. While Cruise has had a hit-or-miss track record with SF, this one looks to at least deliver on the action front, with Cruise and Emily Blunt blasting holes in tentacled aliens while sporting badass combat exoskeletons that let them do things like, for instance, somersault through the air so they can hack apart aliens with a sword that looks like it was pulled out of Final Fantasy. Much of the footage is set during the battle we saw in the previous trailer — it looks like the storming of Normandy, but with high-tech air support, soldiers dropping out of the sky, and, well, aliens. Unfortunately, the trailer makes it clear that this battle does not go well for our side. Cruise’s inexperienced Lt. Bill Cage is thrown into the fracas and dies almost immediately…only to reawaken, Groundhog Day style, with his memories intact. Here’s Cage moments before one of his less dignified deaths — flattened by a speeding truck.
That pattern continues — “live, die, repeat” — as the film’s slugline puts it, with Cage dying over and over again, but he soon meets another repeater, Blunt’s Rita Vrataski. Together, the pair begin training with each new resurrection, hoping to make Cage such a skilled weapon that he can turn the tide of battle and defeat the alien invaders.
While they’re hidden in super-quick cuts, this latest trailer does give us some better looks at the squidlike aliens Cage and company are up against. I’m presuming they’re biological, but they almost look like they could be mechanical. There’s more than a passing resemblance to The Matrix’s multi-tentacled “Sentinels.” Either way, they’re fast and deadly, and some of the early material from the film suggests that they may possess the same time-hopping power that Cage finds himself in possession of. Clearly, they’re bad news.
Edge of Tomorrow was directed by Bourne veteran Doug Liman, from a script by Christopher McQuarrie (Jack Reacher) and Jez Butterworth & John-Henry Butterworth (Fair Game). It hits theaters on June 6, when it will presumably do lots of repeat business. (Hey-oooooooooo!)
Frankly, it’s earned my ticket for this screencap alone.
