Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey – both of whom were breakout stars on Game of Thrones – have been cast as the stars of HBO’s The Last of Us adaptation. The apocalyptic television series is based on PlayStation’s hit video game series. These days, Pascal is known as the star of The Mandalorian and Max Lord from Wonder Woman 1984. However, there doesn’t seem to be any conflict between both The Mandalorian and The Last of Us, as Pascal will continue to star in both.

The Last of Us follows Pedro Pascal’s character, Joel, as he is hired to break a teenager out of a quarantine zone. The teenager Ellie – which will be played by Bella Ramsay – turns out to be more important than Joel realized. The pair are then stuck navigating the pandemic-ridden United States as they face both present horrors and hauntings from their trauma-filled pasts. Though it’s still in its early stages, it seems like HBO is expecting The Last of Us to be one of their bigger hits.

While video game adaptations often have a negative connotation to them, the tide is starting to shift on them. Netflix has found great success with projects like The Witcher and their Castlevania anime. They are also working on multiple projects based on the Assassin’s Creed and Resident Evil franchises. HBO is taking a massive swing, attempting to adapt one of the most beloved games in recent years, with The Last of Us, yet with Pedro Pascal as the star and a great team behind the project, it seems as though HBO is on the right track.

The Last of Us

The Last of Us has a team that seems well-chosen for this adaptation. Neil Druckmann, the president of The Last of Us makers Naughty Dog, will help write and executive produce the series. In addition, Craig Mazin, the Emmy-award winning creator of HBO’s Chernobyl miniseries is also co-writing and executive producing. In addition to several executive producers from both Naughty Dog and PlayStation, the show is the first produced by PlayStation Productions. Kantemir Balagov, the impressive director who made his debut with last year’s Beanpole, will be directing the series, and Gustavo Santaolalla, who composed and produced the scores of The Last of Us and last year’s The Last of Us Part II will be composing the show’s score. This great team was already in place before the recent announcement that Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey would be starring in the highly-anticipated series.

The official synopsis presented by HBO makes it sound as though this adaptation will only focus on the first game in the series. Although if The Last of Us is as successful as HBO hopes, it seems possible the series could also tackle The Last of Us Part II‘s series with another season.

Pedro Pascal likely has his choice of projects right now. With The Mandalorian doing so well and his standout role in Wonder Woman 1984, who wouldn’t want Pascal in their project? With an exciting team working on the series and HBO already building excitement over the new series, The Last Of Us is shaping up to be a promising series to check out.
