We are only a week or so away from getting Ghostbusters: Afterlife, a welcome return to the world of these proton packers. It will usher in a new group of characters in a continuation story of the original movies. Don’t expect it to be the last we hear about the franchise either. It looks like Sony has some big plans for this time-honored title. The latest Giant Freakin Robot exclusive from our trusted and proven source has it that there is a Ghostbusters series in development right now. It appears the plan is to sell it to a major streaming service and we could be looking at a franchise ready to really head into growth mode.

While there are precious few details about what this Ghostbusters series will entail, it looks like the plan, for now, is to try and sell it to the likes of Amazon or Netflix, one of the major streamers. Considering the popularity of the overall IP, landing a series on one of the major platforms makes total sense. And this is a situation in which Sony really “loses” by not having its own streaming service. They are one of the only holdouts in this world, not having a clear and logical landing place for its properties when it comes to streaming. It’s not the end of the world considering the popularity of some of its products, though it has led to delays in some of its movies over the last couple, pandemic-filled years. Part of their overall strategy is to just sell different productions to the highest bidder in the streaming wars. The Ghostbusters series would fall into his category.

It’s hard to know, at this point, what a Ghostbusters series would mean when it comes to this next movie, Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The film, set for release on November 19th, will act as a successor to the first two classic films. Seemingly ignoring what went down with the all-female Ghostbusters reboot, this one will follow the story of McKenna Grace’s Phoebe and Finn Wolfhard’s Trevor who move to the Midwest only to realize the world of ghosts is still very much active outside the bright lights of New York City. Connecting them to the original movie’s world will be that they are the grandchildren of Egon Spengler, played in the first movies by the late Harold Ramis. While the story will be an original, we are going to get appearances from Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Sigourney Weaver.

The planned Ghostbusters series could pick up after this movie in some fashion or it could just become a standalone story of its own. Though the original characters are etched into the collective zeitgeist, there’s no reason a series would need to adhere to the exact same storylines. The world is a big place and Ghostbusters can come in all shapes and sizes. A series could explore a number of different avenues, or maybe even be a prequel of sorts. If this movie is a box office success, and there’s reason to expect that it will be, then the Ghostbuster series could capitalize in a number of different ways. Time will tell what happens with this planned series, but rest assured we are going to get a lot more Ghostbusters in our lives.
