Rian Johnson faced rocky reception from his divisive entry in the latest Star Wars trilogy with The Last Jedi. His turnaround went to the highly acclaimed Knives Out – a whodunit with a star-studded lineup – and with that success, he went to work on a sequel with the lead detective, Daniel Craig. Announcement after announcement has come about the big names that will appear in the next mystery, and we have a look at who else might pop up, the four-time Academy Award nominee Ethan Hawke (Training Day).

A tweet from user mclinebrasil, a fan account of Madelyn Cline (Stranger Things) posted pictures on the set of the murder mystery from Cline, Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Ethan Hawke. The three cast members are on a beach in Greece with Hawke holding some kind of device up (high-end water gun?) to the tattooed Avengers star.

Following up with his satirical 2019 whodunit, Knives Out 2 will likely follow suit with similar themes about the wealthy. It is reaffirmed with the set pictures as the cast are dressed nicely, ready to relax during their European vacation. Ethan Hawke is a third party, while the other two look like they are together. Regardless, based on the way everyone is dressed, it seems the director is sticking to similar themes regarding the eccentric characters who will be put on the wall as suspects.

We don’t quite have an exact plot or who any of the actors will be playing. Outside of Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc traveling to a new case, all we know is the Greek locale and the mountain of A-list faces that will be investigated by the detective with a Southern drawl who loves to make donut hole references.

Outside of Ethan Hawke appearing with the already confirmed stars, there is more to go around. Much of the lineup was revealed back in May. Kicking off on May 11 came with Edward Norton (American History X), with a day later Janelle Monáe (Hidden Figures) stepping on this murderous ride. Two days later, Kathryn Hahn (WandaVision) continues her streak in the spotlight by jumping onboard. Leslie Odom Jr. went from the musical realm of Hamilton to flying out to Greece to join his co-stars. The month rounded off with Kate Hudson (Almost Famous).

June kept it rolling to extend the already filled-up lineup. Cline was announced to join the cast with Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist) returning to Netflix for the film.

Outside of getting award-nominated actors like Ethan Hawke, which will certainly help his career being in this anticipated sequel, it is an all-around big win for Netflix. Earlier this year, The Hollywood Reporter sketched out more details about the over $460 million deal. The streaming giant would get the rights to Knives Out 2 and 3, with Johnson, Craig, and Johnson’s producing partner Ram Bergman earning up to $100 million each. The only two contingencies were that Daniel Craig reprised his role for each entry and that the budget is met with a similar amount as the first film, approximately $40 million.

Pushing over $450 million is more than the box office of the 2019 flick, as that earned $311 million, but clearly Netflix sees the opportunity in taking hold over the film. No release date is set for Knives Out 2, but Netflix subscribers will have the exclusive viewing when it is out.
