As Disney moves to focus their attention on Disney+ programming, their recent announcements have shown they want to get their major Marvel Cinematic Universe stars onto the streaming service as well. With Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, and Samuel L. Jackson all signed on for various Disney+ projects, a new rumor suggests Disney is trying to get Chris Hemsworth on a new Disney+ special.

The rumor comes from gossip writer Daniel Richtman’s Patreon, where he says that Thor might get his own special, similar to The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special that is coming in late 2022. Since Chris Hemsworth is one of the biggest stars currently in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this seems like a more viable goal than trying to give him his own television show on Disney+.

The world of Thor is already coming to Disney+ this year with Loki, a miniseries that will focus on Thor’s brother, Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston. While it doesn’t look as though Chris Hemsworth will be appearing in Loki, it’s clear that Disney+ wants to build out the Thor world. At this point, it seems likely the next time we see Thor will be in 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder, which is planned for a May 6, 2022 release date.

However, it’s unclear when this Chris Hemsworth-starring Thor project would even be filmed. As of right now, Thor: Love and Thunder is currently the only planned Marvel Cinematic Universe project that will include Thor, so it’s possible this special could be filmed around the same time as Thor: Love and Thunder. However, this might be a bit much for Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi, who is also rumored to be filming for the new Walt Disney World ride Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind, since the Guardians fo the Galaxy will be appearing in Thor: Love and Thunder. Making a major Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, a theme park ride movie, and a Thor special might be a bit too much for Waititi all at once.

But it does seem like for the time being, Thor and the Guardians of the Galaxy are going to be directly tied together. When announcing the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, Marvel let it slip that Gamora would be returning. Since as of now, it seems that the only time we’re going to see the Guardians prior to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is in Thor: Love and Thunder, it’s possible we might see the return of Zoe Saldana’s Gamora in Thor: Love and Thunder. It’s even possible Chris Hemsworth could appear in the Guardians fo the Galaxy Holiday Special as well.

Maybe the attempt to make a Chris Hemsworth-starring one-off special will be for another Christmas special? Maybe after The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, Disney+ will want to make Marvel-focused holiday specials going forward, making it an annual tradition? At this point, it’s clear that Marvel would want Chris Hemsworth to appear on Disney+ in some way, but what that project will be, or when it will be made, or if it’s even really in development right now, is anybody’s guess.
