Brendan Fraser understands that people hate The Mummy Returns for its terrible CGI.

You would be hard-pressed to find anyone who hates Brendan Fraser and The Mummy series. Now, Fraser has joined GQ in their running video series where iconic actors break down their most famous roles, which we all know involves Fraser being Rick O’Connell in The Mummy series. The beloved actor revealed that the team who had done the CGI on Dwayne Johnson’s Scorpion King approached him at the premiere and stated, ” Yeah we needed a little more time…it was kind of last minute.”

Brendan Fraser is certainly quite self-aware of the hatred that The Mummy Returns has received through the years, especially when it comes to the terrible CGI in the movie. He even goes so far as to state that people wanted, “more of the same, so we gave them more of the same.” However, he also stated that he loved making the movie, and it was like seeing all his friends after a summer break and getting to work with some of the best people once again.

Though Brendan Fraser knows that the CGI in The Mummy Returns wasn’t of the highest quality, he still defends the movie and that role, and he certainly should. Rick O’Connell became the role that placed the man firmly at the top of the Hollywood charts in the late 1990s and early 2000s. However, it would be those roles that also cost the man many years of on-screen time, as he has recently revealed the physical struggles he had to endure while making those action-packed movies. Thankfully, he is now going through a huge comeback, and his newest venture is already being called Oscar-worthy.

Brendan Fraser may return to the world of The Mummy in the future, and he has expressed interest in doing so if someone comes up with a worthwhile idea, but for now, he is starring in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale, which held its premiere at the Venice Film Festival back in August. The performance and movie were treated with a huge standing ovation, leaving the beloved actor in tears.

We were meant to see Fraser return sooner than that, as he was set to portray Firefly in the Batgirl movie, which was unceremoniously canceled by Warner Bros. Discovery. Though the cancelation has certainly made everyone quite upset, life must move on, and we at least get to see the actor return next month. And for those who want some pure nostalgia, the above video is chock full of it, as Brendan Fraser speaks openly about The Mummy, George of the Jungle, and Encino Man.

The Whale will officially premiere on December 9th, and the first trailer that was released already paints a picture of a purely emotional journey. Brendan Fraser looks like he will be returning to proper form and reminding everyone why they fell in love with his acting like they had in The Mummy series. We may not ever see Fraser appear again as Rick O’Connell unless, of course, some brave soul writes a script that blows everyone away.

We are all hoping that Brendan Fraser returns to the world of The Mummy, and with current CGI technology, the potential sequel will certainly not be surrounded by controversy. At least, we hope it isn’t.
