HeroShotFeatLast night the first full trailer for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy premiered on Jimmy Kimmel Live…and it was glorious. Writer/director James Gunn is putting the “Universe” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he’s created a vibrant, surreal, colorful array of characters and alien locales that looks great. At two and a half minutes, the trailer is packed with humor and action, not to mention a few details you might have missed. Below we’ll break the trailer down in detail, and point out a few things you might have missed. (You can click the images for larger versions.)

The trailer opens with Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) raiding some sort of ancient alien tomb and discovering a mysterious blue orb. It’s speculated that this may be one of the Infinity Stones, powerful artifacts that Thanos is likely trying to get his hands on. We’ve already seen two of them before: the Tesseract from Captain America/Avengers and the Aether from last year’s Thor: The Dark World.
