BBC America Will Be Airing Classic Doctor Who Episodes To Celebrate Each Doctor

It seems that each new week brings news of another event or project tied into the BBC’s 50th anniversary celebration of Doctor Who. While much of that news has centered on new episodes or audio dramas or short stories, fans will also have an excuse to celebrate the show’s long run by re-experiencing some of the classic episodes. Beginning this Sunday, BBC America will be airing some of the classic Who serials, one per month, and one per Doctor.
Things kick off this Sunday, January 27th, at 9 p.m. EST. BBC America will air the four-part serial “The Aztecs,” starring William Hartnell as the First Doctor. Things are a bit unclear at this point, but I’m guessing they’ll air all four episodes of “The Aztecs” Sunday, then the next batch won’t arrive until February. You’d think it would make more sense to air one episode of the serial per week, but it sounds like they’re just airing the whole shebang back to back on Sunday. Either way, it’s a great excuse for newer Who fans to sample the Doctors and the stories that came before.
Of course, if you’ve got a craving for classic Who, there are easier ways to go about it. Both Netflix and Amazon Prime have tons of older episodes available streaming, and I’m sure other streaming providers probably do as well. If you’re looking to just get a bite-size sampling of the older Doctors, though, it sounds like BBC America is the place to go.
