Last month, Bloody Disgusting announced a The Strangers remake was in the works, with producer Roy Lee (The Ring, IT, Poltergeist, Barbarian) telling the site that production on the new horror movie was scheduled to begin this September. Now, according to Deadline, Madelaine Petsch (Riverdale), Froy Gutierrez (Cruel Summer), and Gabriel Basso (Hillbilly Elegy) have been cast in the project, which will be the first of three new installments. The upcoming feature, which will be helmed by Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2: Die Harder), recently entered production in Slovakia.

2008’s The Strangers centered on a young couple, James Hoyt (Scott Speedman) and Kristen McKay (Liv Tyler,) who are terrorized by three unknown assailants while staying in an isolated vacation home. In the remake, a young woman (Petsch) drives cross-country with her boyfriend (Gutierrez) to start a new life in the Pacific Northwest. After their vehicle breaks down in Venus, Oregon, they spend the night in a secluded Airbnb, where they’re terrorized by three masked strangers.

Given the success of the original film, the news of a The Strangers remake shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. Released June 1st, 2008, the first flick became a sleeper hit for Universal Pictures, earning $20 million in its opening weekend and finishing its theatrical run with around $82 million globally. Bryan Bertino wrote and directed the movie in his feature debut.

Bertino served as a co-writer for the 2018 sequel, Prey at Night, with Ben Ketai. Johannes Roberts took over director duties for the follow-up, which followed a family of four staying at a secluded mobile home park, who are stalked and then hunted by three masked psychopaths. The recently announced The Strangers remake will keep the home invasion aspect of the original series, but it will shift the setting to one more relatable to today’s audiences.

Renny Harlin is attached to direct the forthcoming The Strangers remake, as well as its two sequels. He’s directed a number of horror movies including The Covenant, Mindhunters, Exorcist: The Beginning, and A Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master. His recently helmed features include Inspector Palmu, The Misfits, and Class Reunion 3.

Prior to landing the lead role in the anticipated The Strangers remake, Madelaine Petsch has starred as Cheryl Blossom on The CW’s hit series Riverdale since it premiered in 2017. The show has been renewed for a seventh and final season, which is scheduled to premiere in 2023. Her other acting credits include Jane, Sightless, and the 2019 horror flick Polaroid.

Froy Gutierrez is set to play the boyfriend of Petsch’s character in The Strangers, which is the current title for the upcoming remake. He currently plays the character of Jamie Henson on Freeform’s series Cruel Summer, which was recently renewed for a second season. His other acting credits include Teen Wolf, Light as a Feather, and Hocus Pocus 2, which will arrive on Disney+ on September 30th.

Gabriel Basso is best known for his role on the hit Showtime series The Big C. He recently appeared in the Ron Howard-directed drama Hillbilly Elegy, and he’s also starred in films like The Kings Summer and Super 8. The actor’s role in The Strangers is currently unknown, but given his star power, it’s likely he’ll have a significant part in the remake.

2008’s The Strangers was released by Universal Pictures, while Aviron Pictures distributed its 2018 sequel Prey at Night. Lionsgate will release the remake, which is now in production. There is currently no release date for the upcoming horror flick at this time.
