The Night Agent Season 2 Coming To Netflix Sooner Than Expected?

By Douglas Helm | Published

Fans of Netflix’s The Night Agent might be getting Season 2 sooner than expected, as there has apparently been quite a bit of work done on the season already. Creator Shawn Ryan took to X to confirm that scripts for the season were already halfway done when the WGA went on strike and that the writers have been back at it since early October, almost right after the strike ended. The first season of the series became the sixth most-viewed Netflix show of all time 25 days after its premiere, so the streamer is likely eager to get the second season underway.

One of Netflix’s biggest hits this year, The Night Agent, is coming back soon since half the scripts were already written before the WGA strike.

The Night Agent Season 2 will follow the thrilling first season, where Gabriel Basso stars as Peter Sutherland, an FBI agent who is in charge of a mysterious phone in the White House. He receives a call that could uncover a dangerous conspiracy involving a mole. The series is based on the novel of the same name by Matthew Quirk and also stars Luciane Buchanan, Fola Evans-Akingbola, Sarah Desjardins, Eve Harlow, Phoenix Raei, Enrique Murciano, DB Woodside, and Hong Chau.

In addition to being a viewership juggernaut for Netflix, the first season of The Night Agent was also met with generally positive reviews, both trends that the second season will likely be looking to repeat. However, it’s worth keeping in mind that we may still have to wait at least half a year or more before we get to see the second season. While the writers for the series have the green light to finish up all of the scripts, filming won’t be able to begin for the series yet.

Interestingly enough, the reported main sticking point between the two parties involves streaming residuals — something that would directly affect the cast of The Night Agent Season 2.

The WGA did reach a tentative agreement with the studios represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, but the actors union SAG-AFTRA is still on strike. Similar to the WGA’s stipulations, the actors who are part of the union will not be working on studio productions until the strike is over and an agreement is reached. This means we may see filming for The Night Agent Season 2 pushed back for a bit.

Negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP were recently tabled when the AMPTP determined the two parties were “too far apart” on the terms of their new deal. Interestingly enough, the reported main sticking point between the two parties involves streaming residuals — something that would directly affect the cast of The Night Agent Season 2. SAG-AFTRA is reportedly looking to collect a yearly $500 million fee from various streaming platforms, divided up based on number of subscribers.

In addition to being a viewership juggernaut for Netflix, the first season of The Night Agent was also met with generally positive reviews, both trends that the second season will likely be looking to repeat.

The fee would then be distributed amongst actors on streaming shows, like the actors for The Night Agent Season 2, presumably based on metrics like viewership and show rankings. So, this would probably be a nice bonus for cast members of shows like The Night Agent, which became the sixth-highest viewed show on the platform and raked in 605.62 million total hours viewed in the first 25 days of streaming.

For now, we’ll have to wait and see what the release date will be for The Night Agent Season 2. Hopefully, we’ll at least get to see the show in 2024. Stay tuned because we’ll keep you updated either way.
