Audiences have been anxiously awaiting a sequel to 2016’s The Accountant. While the action-thriller got mixed reviews from critics, it raked in $155 million worldwide and Ben Affleck’s performance was highly praised. This week, an image on social media made it official–The Accountant 2 has started principal production.

Amazon Studios and Affleck’s (and Matt Damon’s) Artists Equity production company shared the first behind-the-scenes look at The Accountant 2 on Instagram. The picture of the clapboard shows Gavin O’Connor is back in the director’s chair. O’Connor is known for films like Warrior and Pride and Glory.

Cast Returning And Otherwise

It’s said that J.K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal and Cynthia Addai-Robinson will all return to The Accountant 2 to reprise their roles from the first film. And, of course, center stage is Ben Affleck.

Entertainment Tonight reports that Anna Kendrick, who played accountant Dana Cummings in the first film, will not be back for The Accountant 2. It’s not known at this point if other stars like Jean Smart, John Lithgow and Jeffrey Tambor will appear in the sequel.

The Accountant (2016)

The first film follows Christian Wolff (Affleck), a math savant and certified public accountant who has a hard time socializing with other people, although he says he wants to. Wolff is autistic and also has highly advanced cognitive skills. He uses those skills to act as a CPA for unlawful businesses and criminal organizations.

Eventually, the Treasury Department’s Crime Enforcement Division, run by Ray King (Simmons), starts to close in.

Critics Didn’t Stop The Accountant From Making Its Mark

There is a lot of buzz about The Accountant 2 right now, especially since the first is streaming on Netflix and garnering a new audience that may have missed it the first time around.

The first film did well at the box office, although critical reviews were mixed. Some autism advocacy groups praised the movie’s portrayal of the complex neurological and developmental disorder, while others members of the community criticized it, saying films like The Accountant and Rain Man give the impression that all people with autism have savant-like qualities. Also, some said it was concerning that The Accountant features a character with autism who has guns and engages in aggression and violence.

What We Know About The Accountant 2

According to a logline for The Accountant 2, Affleck’s character is still up to his old ways when he is contacted by Addai-Robinson’s character to help solve the murder of her former boss. Affleck’s on-screen brother (Jon Bernthal) is going to have a much bigger role for The Accountant 2 and will be brought in to help solve the murder as well.

No doubt the sequel will have a lot of action, like the first. The Accountant was lauded for its action sequences featuring Pencak silat, an Indonesian martial art.

The Accountant 3?

And that’s not all. Director Gavin O’Connor already has plans for a third Accountant movie. According to CinemaBlend, he is describing it as “Rain Man on steroids” and that it will be like a buddy picture, focusing on the two brothers and their “odd couple”-like relationship.

The Accountant 2 started principal production with a potential release date of mid-2025.
