According to Collider, the hit animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 is already in the works. Tawny Newsome (the actress who voices Beckett Mariner in the animated series and plays the same character in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds) spoke to the site about how the cast of the popular show is already in the sound booth recording voice-over work for season 5.
Star Trek: Lower Decks Returning
The season 4 finale of Star Trek: Lower Decks ended with a “bang”, featuring some well-known guest stars, an emotional tribute to characters past, and even a big promotion for Beckett Mariner.
Given that the writer/actor strikes have finally subsided, the cast of the popular show was able to get back to work on their next season almost immediately after season 4 wrapped airing.
Mariner Will Be Changed
Newsome even dropped a little teaser about what fans of the show can expect to see from Mariner next season.
The actress revealed that Mariner will be a changed woman in the new season of Star Trek: Lower Decks given that she has finally unloaded the emotional weight she had been carrying for the first four seasons of the show.
Navigating A New Starfleet Position
Mariner will have to learn to navigate her new position as a Starfleet Lieutenant and take on more mature roles moving forward, but Newsome made sure to note that Mariner is still an “element of chaos”.
Tawny spoke saying Mariner can no longer deal with situations as recklessly as she has in the past. She will now have to “choose her battles” more wisely and pass on all of the self-destructive coping she indulged in up until now.
Still Mariner In Star Trek: Lower Decks
Though Mariner’s character will be a little different due to her marked maturity and emotional progress, Newsome was quite clear that Mariner will certainly still be Mariner in season 5 of Star Trek: Lower Decks. She may just be a bit more joyous and light along with a little added maturity.
While Tawny couldn’t reveal too much more about the upcoming season of Star Trek: Lower Decks, the series creator, Mike McMahan made a promise to fans that the next season of the show will still be “incredibly Star Trek”.
More Legacy Character
Fans can expect more legacy characters, a few secret surprises, and plenty more of everything you like about Star Trek: Lower Decks “in ways you haven’t seen before”.
There is no set release date for the new season of Star Trek: Lower Decks, but fans can likely expect to start seeing new episodes sometime next year.
There are also plenty more opportunities to indulge in the Star Trek Universe until then. Star Trek: Discovery is dropping its final season early next year.
Streaming On Paramount+
Star Trek: Prodigy is dropping season 2 of the show around the same time, and seasons 1-4 of Star Trek: Lower Decks will be available for streaming in its entirety on Paramount+.
