Although The Matrix first premiered almost 20 years ago, the franchise has proven to have mass appeal and an admirable amount of longevity. With The Matrix: Resurrections hitting theaters as well as HBO Max, appreciation for the franchise has never been higher. We’ve seen references to Neo and company all over the place. Now even the new Sonic the Hedgehog movie is jumping on the bandwagon. The animated feature has taken inspiration from the franchise in a new trailer.

The trailer was posted on the official Twitter for the new Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Featuring the much-beloved, fast-paced character, the trailer takes many visual queues taken from The Matrix. It opens as green code in the shapes of rings travels down a black screen. Also reminiscent of the franchise is the idea of Neo taking a red or blue pill. In the trailer, these colors are instead attributed to Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and Knuckles (Idris Elba). The video asks the question: Red quill or blue quill? Check it out.

There is no telling if the Sonic the Hedgehog movie will fully commit to The Matrix theme or not. More than likely it is a fun way to reference The Matrix film which has been getting rave reviews since its recent release. Sonic fans have a lot to look forward to in the upcoming film as well. Ben Schwartz returns as the titular character, though this time with no animation controversy (via Vulture). Many will be relieved to see that the redesign from the previous movie has been replicated so that Sonic will appear just how he does in the video games. The initial design had made fans incensed as it appeared to have a strange mix of animation and realism.

Audiences can sit comfortably at the new sequel. The Sonic the Hedgehog movie will pick up as Sonic makes a new life for himself on Earth. The trailer features a mix of live-action and animation as Sonic races around. Old favorites are returning such as Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey), the main antagonist of the games. This time around Robotnik appears to be a closer adaptation of his video game counterpart, all with the exaggerated mustache (Comicbook.com). James Marsden will be reprising his character from the first movie as well.

Fans may be excited for the new additions to the cast in the sequel. As the trailer shows, Sonic will not only be facing off against Dr. Robotnik, but another familiar face from the games. Knuckles the Echidna is the red quill part of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie equation. This new addition is a plus for video game fans. Not only is Knuckles one of the iconic characters of the game, but they are voiced by none other than Idris Elba. The actor is known for his massive appeal. So much so that Elbra confirmed after his casting that his acting for Knuckles would not be overshadowed by a vibe of being “sexy” (via Screenrant). However after perusal of the trailer, many agree that in this aim, the actor failed. Elba cannot help his appeal and many noted that the voice of Knuckles is sexier than it should be (via The Verge).

Also to join the new cast is Sonic’s sidekick Tails the Fox (via Deadline). They will be voiced by video game voiceover veteran, Colleen O’Shaughnessey. Fans can catch the new Sonic the Hedgehog movie when it premieres on April 8th, 2022.
