According to an exclusive write-up in Collider, a third film in the Sicario franchise has been greenlit with Mission: Impossible’s Christopher McQuarrie possibly attached to direct. While it’s too early to say for sure who will helm Sicario 3, the critically acclaimed crime franchise has touted such filmmaking talent as Dune‘s Denis Villeneuve, Without Remorse‘s Stefano Sollima, and Yellowstone‘s Taylor Sheridan in the past.

During a press junket to discuss their latest film, Reptile, Sicario producers Trent Luckinbill and Molly Smith elucidated on their partnership with Christopher McQuarrie.

Sicario 3 has gotten the green light with Christopher McQuarrie of Mission: Impossible fame possibly directing.

The duo stressed that it’s too soon to know who will be directing the upcoming film, though Christopher McQuarrie has been tapped as a production partner at the very least. Taylor Sheridan is also set to return for Sicario 3, though other names involved with the project, such as the film’s writer, have been mysteriously kept under wraps.

While Christopher McQuarrie is likely still tied up with the upcoming Mission: Impossible 8, it’s tough to know if he’d have time to write the screenplay, which producers claim to have nearly finished.

In addition to the original Yellowstone series, Sheridan has overseen work on numerous spin-offs and side projects within the screen universe, including an upcoming series starring Matthew McConaughey.

Of course, Mission: Impossible 8 has been the subject of a number of intensive production delays amid the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes which plagued much of this past year, meaning McQuarrie may have had some additional time to ruminate on script possibilities for Sicario 3.

If McQuarrie is too bogged down in the weeds of the Tom Cruise-led production, Taylor Sheridan could helm the sequel, though producers have shown concern that the Academy Award nominee is too busy with the expansive Yellowstone universe.

The most likely scenario for Sicario 3 is that Sheridan will remain attached as a producer, offering tips and insight while remaining hands-off enough to oversee his vision within the Yellowstone franchise. For both Sheridan and McQuarrie, the biggest hurdle for helming the upcoming sequel seems to be scheduling.

The first two films also contained jaw-dropping performances from Raoul Max Trujillo, Catherine Keener, Isabela Merced, Jon Bernthal, and Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse‘s Daniel Kaluuya.

All things considered, this is a good problem for a critically acclaimed franchise to have. With multiple award-winning filmmakers in talks to helm Sicario 3, the production seems to be suffering from an embarrassment of riches. Obviously scheduling details will need to be ironed out once the screenplay is fully completed, though producers Trent Luckinbill and Molly Smith feel highly confident that the film will land in good hands.

In addition to big names on the production and filmmaking side, a number of franchise stars are looking to return for Sicario 3 as well. Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt, and Josh Brolin are just a few stars who have confirmed interest in joining the project for another installment, while other new and returning cast mates are sure to join.
