Arnie might be headed to Pandora.

ArnieWhile the Avatar sequels are rumored to start production at the beginning of 2014, director James Cameron is already hard at work, planning the three movies to be made simultaneously. He’s brought on a fleet of new writers to help realize his vision and he’s brought back a majority of the cast of the original Avatar It now seems that another of James Cameron’s former collaborators might be taking a trip to Pandora: Arnold Schwarzenegger.

According to Latino Review’s inside sources, Schwarzenegger may re-team with Cameron for the Avatar sequels. While the outlet doesn’t give any specifics on the role, it is rumored that he would play the trilogy’s main villain. If you remember, the bad guy in the original Avatar, Col. Miles Quaritch — wonderfully played by Stephen Lang — was killed at the end of the film, so the antagonist position for the sequels is currently open.

Obviously, Arnold Schwarzenegger owes much of his career to James Cameron, thanks to movies such as the original Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and True Lies. Before Schwarzenegger appeared as the Terminator, he was in a few major movies like the Conan the Barbarian movies, but never hit the main stream until he started working with Cameron. Although The Last Stand was a fun throwback action movie, Schwarzenegger’s appearance in the film didn’t exactly bring audiences to the theater. Re-uniting this pair might be the thing Arnold Schwarzenegger needs to re-ignite his acting career after his stint as Governor of California.

Schwarzenegger is currently confirmed to be appearing in the new Terminator film trilogy, which is slated for release in July 2015. It’s unclear who Schwarzenegger will play, but he’s rumored to be a human protector of Sarah Connor’s parents in the 1950s. With Terminator 5 in 2015 and possibly Avatar 2 in 2016, Schwarzenegger’s comeback career will be on pace for success. It’s doubtful that these new entries in established film franchises will perform badly when they’re released into theaters.

About a month ago, James Cameron hired screenwriters Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connors Chronicles), Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), and Shane Salerno (Armageddon, Salinger) to help him write the new Avatar trilogy. Cameron will be spending the next five years of his career on the Avatar sequels, so hopefully they’re something more exciting than the original. It will be hard to top, but I would never count out James Cameron.

At the moment, there are no plot details about the Avatar sequels, but it is believed that they will further explore the alien terrain of Pandora; Avatar 2 would involve its oceans, while Avatar 3 would explore its orbit and Moon. James Cameron has stated that Avatar 4 would be a prequel and follow the Na’vi before humans discovered Pandora.

Production on the sequels will make its way down to Peter Jackson’s WETA Studios in New Zealand. Fox has yet to announce an official release date for the Avatar sequels, but Avatar 2 is slated for sometime around Christmas 2016, Avatar 3 for Christmas 2017, and Avatar 4 for Christmas 2018.
