Apple TV+ is bringing us a brand new detective series that will star former Doctor Who Peter Capaldi and The Good Wife and The Good Fight star Cush Jumbo. The series is set to be a one-hour thriller set in London with eight episodes ordered. The series, called Criminal Record, is currently filming so we’ll have to wait to see when it will release on Apple’s streaming platform.

Criminal Record will bring together two brilliant detectives after an anonymous phone call digs up an old murder case. Cush Jumbo will play Detective Sgt. June Lenker, a young woman whose promising career is just starting. Peter Capaldi is playing Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty, a well-connected man with a storied legacy thanks to his work as a detective. According to the series description, the show will be heavily character-driven and will touch on issues like race, institutional failure, and common ground in a polarized era.

Criminal Record is brought to us by Paul Rutman, Tod Productions, and STV Studios. Rutman also executive produces, along with Elaine Collins, Peter Capaldi, and Cush Jumbo. Jim Loach is on to direct. STV Studios and Tod Productions produce.

Criminal Record will be the next project Peter Capaldi is working on, but he should see him on screen again before the end of the year. Capaldi is starring in the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series The Devil’s Hour, which is set to release sometime in 2022. The Devil’s Hour tells the story of a woman who wakes up every night at exactly 3:33 am, which is known as the devil’s hour. Along with Capaldi, the show will star Jessica Raine, Benjamin Chivers, Phil Dunster, Ramanique Ahluwalia, Meera Syal, Cecilia Blair, Muki Zubis, and more.

Cush Jumbo last appeared in episodes of The Good Fight and the TV series Stay Close in 2021. Her next project will be Balestra, which is currently in post-production. Balestra is a sports thriller about a competitive fencer who uses an experimental device that allows her to train through lucid dreaming. However, she meets a mysterious stranger in her lucid dreams that throws her life into disarray. Nicole Dorsey directs the script by Imran Zaidi. In addition to Jumbo, the film stars Manny Jacinto, James Badge Dale, Heather Doerksen, Luke Bilyk, Hannah Duke, Stephen Lobo, and more. There isn’t a current release date for Balestra, but presumably, there will be one announced soon.

For Peter Capaldi, Criminal Record and The Devil’s Hour will definitely be his biggest roles since leaving Doctor Who in 2018. Capaldi played the Doctor for many years, starting his tenure in 2008. He also had a prominent role in the blockbuster The Suicide Squad which James Gunn rebooted after the failure of the David Ayer version. Capaldi played the villainous Thinker. For these two dramatic roles, it seems like Capaldi will get a little more to sink his teeth into. Stay tuned for more news about the upcoming Criminal Record and when we can expect to see it hit Apple TV+.
