Is that mischievous scamp James Gunn hinting at a Suicide Squad 2 or just playing with our emotions with this image?

James Gunn has been one of the best parts of both competing comic film universes. First, he brought his own directorial flourish to Guardians of the Galaxy, setting that film apart from its contemporaries in the MCU. When he jumped over to DC, he brought the same energy to The Suicide Squad and the subsequent Peacemaker for HBO. Now it looks like he’s teasing another Suicide Squad movie or at least some more material from that universe on social media. Check out the tweet below:

In the post, James Gunn teases the big plans he has for DC along with a picture of Peter Capaldi’s Thinker. This doesn’t give us very much information to go off of, but it doesn’t get the gears turning on the fan hype train. Since the Thinker was an antagonist in The Suicide Squad does that mean we’ll be getting more from Amanda Waller’s specialized team of villains with bombs in their heads? Or is James Gunn simply putting himself in the Thinker role, showing us that he has a grand plan for all of the upcoming superhero (or villain) content that he’s working on.

One thing is for sure, DC won’t want to let go of James Gunn anytime soon. His work for the comic book giant has undoubtedly been some of the most well-received content they’ve released. The typically dour mood of previous DC films was upended when James Gunn brought the fun to The Suicide Squad. He ratcheted up the groundwork laid in the movie with the follow-up show Peacemaker, which features John Cena reprising the titular role. We know for sure that Peacemaker is getting a second season and that Gunn is working on another Suicide Squad spin-off focusing on Viola Davis’s Amanda Waller, but it’s more than possible that he has more projects up his sleeve.

While we wait to see more from the work James Gunn is doing for DC, we’ll get to see him return to his superhero roots with The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special for Disney+. As you might expect, this special should be hitting the streaming platform around the holidays. This should be the perfect lead-up to James Gunn’s next full-length Marvel feature with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Presumably, this will mark Gunn’s final Guardians film, finishing the story he set out to tell with Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to release sometime in 2023, with plot details being kept under wraps. We do know that Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), Groot (Vin Diesel), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), and Nebula (Karen Gillan) will all be returning. Elizabeth Debicki, Sean Gunn, and Sylvester Stallone will also be back to reprise their roles. One of the more anticipated castings for Vol. 3 is Will Poulter as the previously teased Adam Warlock. One thing is for certain — regardless of what he has planned, there is plenty more James Gunn superhero content on the way.
