Netflix 3 Body Problem Season 2 Has A Big Problem Ahead

By TeeJay Small | Updated

Netflix’s latest sci-fi series, 3 Body Problem, premiered on March 21 to a flurry of viewer engagement, instantly landing the series on the top 10 list for the streamers’ US audience chart.

While early reviews for the series have been mixed, many fans seem to be completely hooked, despite the fact that viewers may be setting themselves up for heartbreak.

3 Body Problem Has A Problem

3 Body Problem ends on a massive cliffhanger, and Netflix has not yet renewed the series for a second season, leaving many fans to worry that the show’s plot will never be properly resolved.

3 Body Problem is an adaptation of a book by Chinese author Cixin Liu, originally published in 2008. It is the first in a trilogy of sci-fi novels.

Stuck In Between?

When the series was first announced to premiere on Netflix, many fans rightly assumed that the first season of the show would closely adapt the first book in the series, leaving the door open for additional seasons to pick up the plot lines from the following books.

Unfortunately, Netflix never made a multi-season order for the show, meaning the streamer may not green-light a conclusion to the cliffhanger that wraps up season 1.

Fans Are Worried

This is especially worrying for fans of the series, as 3 Body Problem failed to pull in overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics or audiences.

While another studio, such as FX or AMC may be comfortable taking a prolonged gamble on the series, Netflix is known to cut shows short, regardless of the fan outcry.

Netflix original shows such as Mindhunter, Glow, and The Santa Clarita Diet have all seen unceremonious cancellations, leaving subscribers with a lot of trepidation regarding cliffhanger endings on the platform.

Massive Investment For Netlfix

3 Body Problem is also a massive financial investment for Netflix, with outlets reporting an estimated production budget of $20 million per episode. With the series being such a costly addition to the streaming library, it seems clear that Netflix decision-makers will not settle for a Rotten Tomatoes score of 76 percent upon the series’ debut.

Furthermore, 3 Body Problem failed to debut at number 1 on the Netflix US charts, falling just shy of the true-crime series Homicide: New York in its opening week. If the multi-million dollar sci-fi epic can’t compete against an easy-to-produce Dick Wolf documentary series, it’s hard to imagine Netflix execs are eager to greenlight additional seasons of the high-concept show.

From Game Of Thrones Showrunners

3 Body Problem was created by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, in collaboration with True Blood writer/producer Alexander Woo.

The series serves as the first major outing for the duo since the disastrous finale of Game of Thrones, which left many audiences feeling unsatisfied, enraged, and even led some to sign an online petition to redo the entire final season.

If 3 Body Problem crashes and burns after just one season on Netflix, it may be the final nail in the pair’s coffin.

No Word From Netflix

Still, there has been no word from Netflix about the future of 3 Body Problem at this time, and the series is still quite new and fresh.

While most shows of this nature tend to rely on massive opening figures, there is still a possibility that the show grows to perform better in the coming weeks. For now, audiences will have to just wait and see.
