Veteran of stage and screen, there is very little Hugh Grant has not done in Hollywood. Having found his calling as the lead in romantic comedies that dominated the box office for two decades, the Englishman is now pursuing different, more duplicitous roles. In an interview with Empire Magazine, the former boyfriend of Elizabeth Hurley admitted filming Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves terrified him.

A fantasy film based off of the largest role-playing game on the planet is a far cry from Notting Hill. Hugh Grant confessed he loves his upcoming Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves role as con artist Forge Fitzwilliam, explaining “the more duplicitous and diabolical and selfish and vain a character is these days, the more it appeals to me. I don’t know what that says about me.” Acting like a conniving thief was the easy part, it was the on-set animatronics that proved to be difficult and scared the Four Weddings and a Funeral star on a regular basis.

Just when you thought you were doing a rather powerful or amusing little bit of acting, you’d realise there was a f**king dragon walking past you in the background, stealing your thunder.

Hugh Grant on filming Dungeons and Dragons

Hugh Grant had never worked with animatronics until Honor Among Thieves and in fact, the interviewer from Empire had to remind him what they were called, prompting this response: “Animatronics! Terrifying. A fish that eats babies! And suddenly the whole floor of the set would be quicksand! I wish I’d had my children with me. They would have liked that.”

Unlike other blockbuster films, and most television shows today, Honor Among Thieves includes plenty of practical effects alongside CGI. So far the trailers have made it seem as if the end result looks much better than the last two Dungeons and Dragons films which are best left forgotten. With all due respect to Marlon Wayans, and the wasted talents of Jeremy Irons, the third attempt is not only bringing Hugh Grant to a fantasy film, but other big name stars alongside as well.

The cast of Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

Honor Among Thieves stars Chris Pine (Star Trek), Michelle Rodriguez (The Fast and The Furious), Rege-Jene Page (Bridgerton), and Justice Smith (Detective Pikachu). Proving already that directors John Francis-Daly (Sweets from Bones) and Jonathan Goldstein know what they are doing, the cast of Critical Role will also have cameos throughout the film. Including Hugh Grant along some of the most popular Dungeons and Dragons players in the world is already more fan service then the first film, which included Beholders as guard dogs, ever included for the audience.

No word on if a possum that’s also a lawyer or a spell-eating umbrella will be included in the film, but as of now, fans have plenty of reasons to be hopeful that the third time is the charm. So long as the film catches the unique spirit of most table-top RPG adventures, minus the randomization of dinners from a Chinese restaurant, Honor Among Thieves will be the first live-action-hit for the franchise. Audiences can delight in Hugh Grant’s Dungeon and Dragons performance alongside life-sized animatronics in just a few weeks when Honor Among Thieves debuts on March 10th.
