Paramount is expanding the A Quiet Place cinematic universe, and it has signed on a Black Panther star to build it. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lupita Nyong’o is close to signing on as the lead actress in A Quiet Place: Day One, a spinoff from the hit sci-fi/horror series from writer/director John Krasinski (The Office, Jack Ryan). The film is due to release on March 8, 2024 and will be directed by Michael Sarnoski, who also directed the Nicolas Cage surprise hit Pig,

The film is based on an idea from John Krasinski, who created the film series and scored a major hit with the first film’s release in 2018. Details of the spinoff’s plot are not known, nor do we know the role Lupita Nyong’o will be playing, but as the title suggests, will feature the initial invasion of the aliens in the film. As the flashback sequence from A Quiet Place Part II showed, the “Day One” concept has shown the ability to provide some thrilling visuals and edge-of-your seat tension.

The first A Quiet Place, written and directed by Krasinski, earned an astonishing $340.9 million worldwide, with a budget of a mere $17 million. The 2021 sequel, A Quiet Place: Part II was released while some pandemic restrictions were still in place, and yet still earned $297 million worldwide.

The film followed the Abbott family, who live in a post-apocalyptic world where aliens with highly sensitive hearing have killed most of the humans on Earth. Forced to live in silence, their world comes crashing down when the creatures discover their farm, deep in the woods. Krasinski starred as Lee Abbott, and his real-life wife Emily Blunt starred as his film wife, Evelyn, with Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe starring as their children.

A third film in the original series is in the works as well, and is due to release in 2025. Day One was first announced at CinemaCon earlier this year, when the announcement was made that Krasinski would not write or direct the film, likely because of his commitments to other projects, including the third film.

Giant Freakin robot reported exclusively earlier this year that Paramount+ was developing a series based on the films, but it is not clear if Lupita Nyong’o will be involved with it. A video game is also reportedly in development.

Lupita Nyong’o is best known for her role as Nakia in the Black Panther and Marvel Cinematic Universe films, as well as her role in Jordan Peele’s Us. She also voiced the CGI character of Maz Kanata in the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy. She won an Academy Award in 2014 for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for 12 Years a Slave.

She has also been nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards for her narration of the documentary Serengeti.

A Quiet Place: Day One will be produced by Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, with Allyson Seeger serving as executive producer.

Lupita Nyong’o will be seen next in Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, opening in theaters on November 11. Her other film credits include The 355, Little Monsters, Queen of Katwe, The Jungle Book, and Non-Stop.
