The first thing we know about A Quiet Place 3 is that A Quiet Place 2 has been pushed back so many times that we may be writing stories about A Quiet Place 7 before we actually get to see it. As of now, A Quiet Place 2 seems firm for its latest release date of April 23, 2021, so we will take this opportunity to ease up with the snarky remarks and actually dig into what we now know about the third installment in this ever-growing franchise.
A QUIET PLACE 3’S NEW DIRECTOR AND STORY
Even though we have no idea how things shake out in the second movie, word has recently come down that there indeed will be A Quiet Place 3. This time though, John Krasinski will be handing over creative duties to Jeff Nichols. Nichols is known for both writing and directing his films which include Shotgun Stories, Take Shelter, Mud, Midnight Special, and Loving. It’s apparent that Nichols can write and direct, but does he have the capability to do effective horror?
Even though Krasinski has handed the writing and directing reins to Nichols, Krasinski will still have some input on A Quiet Place 3. The third story in the series will be based on an original idea from Krasinski. It was his wife, series star Emily Blunt, who sort of pushed him into the possibility of a trilogy after she had read his script for A Quiet Place 2. She felt that there was more story to tell and that a third movie could wrap things up. This got Krasinski to thinking she may be right and that a third movie was possible.
Krasinski spoke to Collider about a possible A Quiet Place 3, long before it was announced. “It’s interesting, I genuinely hadn’t thought about a second one when I was doing the first one. However, I really had these questions while I was doing it. I put the fires out in the distance in the first one, and I always thought to myself, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if we got to explore where those fires lead to? Who’s on the other end of those fires?’ But I never thought that there would be a sequel. So then when I actually came around to writing the sequel, I started with the fires. And so this time, I think when my brain started wandering of questions of what would this mean later on, I started to write down notes in case I could prepare myself for a third one.”
What Krasinski has in mind for A Quiet Place 3 is most definitely an unknown as we aren’t even sure what direction the second will take. We do know the second one brings back all the characters from the first, including Blunt and Krasinski, along with their children, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe, and it also introduces a new character played by Cillian Murphy (The Dark Knight Rises, Red Eye). Who will continue on to the third movie? Hopefully, the second movie will give us some clue. Then again, we may be in for a whole new batch of characters in the third movie. Unfortunately, we will have to wait until April of 2021 before we start to get some answers.
Jeff Nichols was chosen to spearhead A Quiet Place 3 as he had previously developed a working relationship with Paramount Motion Picture Group president Emma Watts. The pair was developing a multi-film adaptation of Alien Nation, which originally was a movie starring James Caan (The Godfather, Elf) and Mandy Patinkin (The Princess Bride). It was eventually turned into a TV series that starred Gary Graham and Eric Pierpoint. The project stalled when Disney purchased Fox and it is not known if they will continue to develop the project.
A SLEEPER HIT
Before we even get to A Quiet Place 3, we have to look back at the movie that started it all. Not much was expected from John Krasinski’s first leap into horror with A Quiet Place. The film starred himself and real-life wife Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns, Edge of Tomorrow) and was made for a super modest $17 million. Well, it brought in over $350 million at the box office. The story followed a family who lived in a world dominated by creatures that hunt with their hearing.
Lee Abbott (Krasinski) and his family move around quietly, having mapped out paths to get them in and out of town quietly. Krasinski’s youngest falls in love with a toy space shuttle when the family is out scavenging for food and goods. As they are walking back home, the boy accidentally turns the toy on. The noise from the toy brings a creature running. Krasinski turns to run to save his son but gets there too late as the creature takes the son, killing him.
The story jumps a year and Blunt’s Evelyn Abbott is pregnant. Lee’s daughter, who is congenitally deaf, blames herself for the death of her younger brother. Lee’s other son is getting older and learning what he can from his father about fishing and protecting the family. In the meantime, Evelyn is alone and going into labor. As she makes her way to the basement, she steps on an exposed nail, causing her to drop a glass picture frame that alerts a creature to her presence. From there, things get crazy. There is a grain silo, fireworks, a flooded basement, more creatures, shotguns, and sadness. It is a well-put-together film, very suspenseful, that obviously left room for a second film.
Who survives and who doesn’t? Well, if you haven’t yet seen the movie, we won’t give anything away. Suffice it to say, they all make an appearance in A Quiet Place 2, but whether that is via flashback or present day is for you to find out.
