Fringe

If you’re looking for an underrated sci-fi series that stars Anna Torv and is created by J.J. Abrams, HBO Max has you covered. According to FlixPatrol, the 2008 series Fringe is now sitting at number 10 on the HBO Max streaming chart. Though it never managed to get as popular as Abrams’ previous series Lost, the show is still well worth the watch if you like mystery sci-fi shows like X-Files or The Twilight Zone.

Fringe stars Anna Torv as FBI Special Agent Olivia Dunham, John Noble as mad scientist Walter Bishop, and Joshua Jackson as his troubled son Peter Bishop. Together, the three take on cases for the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Fringe Division to investigate occurrences that may be linked to a parallel universe. The series was created by J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman, and Robert Orci.

Along with Anna Torv, John Noble, and Joshua Jackson, Fringe stars Lance Reddick, Jasika Nicole, Blair Brown, Kirk Acevedo, Mark Valley, Seth Gabel, Michael Cerveris, Clark Middleton, Leonard Nimoy, and Ari Graynor. The series ended up airing five seasons and 100 episodes before ending in 2013. Generally, Fringe was favorably reviewed and has become a bit of a cult classic over the years.

Interestingly enough, the first season of Fringe tends to be the worst-reviewed season, though it also brought in the most viewers. This is probably because fans were hotly anticipating another sci-fi show from J.J. Abrams after Lost. Since most fans say that the show gets progressively better after the first season, it makes sense that people watching for the first time in 2008 might not have stuck around for more seasons.

As to why Fringe is suddenly getting a second life on HBO Max, people could very well just be searching for more shows with Anna Torv in them. Torv appeared in the first three episodes of the hugely popular The Last of Us as Tess. After her fantastic performance in those episodes, it makes sense that people would want to see more.

Of course, Fringe is a much different kind of sci-fi show than The Last of Us. The Last of Us is more grounded and post-apocalyptic while Fringe focuses more on parallel universes and the supernatural. Still, we have to wait for a new episode of The Last of Us to come out every week, while you can stream all five seasons of Fringe right now.

It’s unclear if we’ll see more of Anna Torv in The Last of Us, but it’s still well worth checking out the first three episodes and tuning in for more on Sundays. The series is adapted from the video game franchise of the same name and follows Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as they trek across a United States ravaged by a fungal pandemic. You can make a mini Anna Torv marathon out of it and watch episodes of Fringe while you wait for new episodes of The Last of Us to come out.
