Watch Karen Gillan Shave Her Head For Guardians Of The Galaxy

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is the kind of movie where damn near everyone involved had to undergo some kind of massive transformation. Most of them involved make up and special effects, like Dave Bautista getting painted blue every day to play Drax, or Zoe Saldana undergoing a similar regimen for Gamora, only with green instead of blue. A few were more long term and time consuming, like Chris Pratt’s transformation from schluby comic relief on NBC’s sitcom Parks and Recreation to the chiseled, six-pack-having leading man you see in the film. And then there were actors buried under tons of practical and digital special effects. One of the most obvious changes, however, was Karen Gillan shaving off all of her hair, which you can now see in this video.

I had the patience to grow my hair long once in my life (and it wasn’t all that long in reality), and even though I hated it, the decision to hack it off was somewhat traumatic because I knew how much time it took to get to that point. And for someone as known for their hair as Gillan is for her lovely red locks, I can only imagine how hesitant she was to make this decision. I’m sure the fact that it was for an important role in a big film, on a scale she’s never worked before in her career, softened the blow a few degrees, but still.

Karen Gillan is following up her stint as Doctor Who companion Amy Pond by slipping into an American accent for the upcoming ABC sitcom Selfie (which is a modern spin on My Fair Lady for our social media-obsessed age). So what better way to help promote a show called Selfie than with, well, a selfie? The setting: Wizard World Chicago. The participants: Gillan, former Who lead Matt Smith, and Blastr journalist/instigator Aaron Sagers. The result:

Karen Gillan Dresses Like The Pink Power Ranger For Her ALS Challenge Video

You already love Karen Gillan. Being on Doctor Who for a number of years, as his companion Amy Pond, pretty much guarantees that. But add to that the fact that she’s stunningly beautiful, a talented actress, and was willing to shave her head and paint herself blue to play Nebula in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and that only further proves her awesomeness. (We really, really, really wish that Selfie show she’s in this fall didn’t look like so god-fucking-awful, she’s better than that.) And beyond all of that, she turned in one of the better ALS Ice Bucket Challenge videos we’ve see yet.

The last couple of weeks have been a continual parade of celebrities trying to one up each other with these challenges, which are designed to raise funds and awareness for ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, research. Charlie Sheen dumped a $10,000 donation over his head and challenged some former costars to do the same, Patrick Stewart wrote a check and dropped some ice in a nice stiff drink, and Gillan, for reasons known only to her, dressed up like the pink Power Ranger. I don’t know why, but that doesn’t make it any less funny.

Doctor Who’s New Companion Revealed!

fb share tweet share

gillan1When Doctor Who returns to the airwaves this season it’ll arrive not only with a brand new Doctor (the youngest actor ever to play the part… Matt Smith is only 26), but with a new companion too. The good news? She’s pretty and she can’t possibly be any more annoying than Donna Noble.

The BBC announced today that Scottish Actress Karen Gillan will be the new addition to the Tardis. She’s 21-years-old and unless you’ve followed her modeling career, she’s a complete unknown to anyone who’s not already a Doctor Who fan.

On the other hand, if your Doctor Who appetite is as voracious as mine then you saw her last season on Doctor Who in the episode “The Fires of Pompeii”, where she played a Soothsayer. No the Soothsayer isn’t hopping on board the Tardis. Gillan will likely play a new character in the Doctor Who universe.
