New Dead Island: Riptide Trailer Is More Interested In Tugging Heartstrings Than Eating Brains
The first-person zombie survival game Dead Island gained a huge influx of attention last year thanks to an unforgettable and emotionally jarring trailer showing the unfortunate end for a family on an island overrun by the undead. It got the project many eyeballs it wouldn’t have otherwise, including mine, which made it a little disappointing when the game itself proved the bear almost no resemblance whatsoever to the trailer that had reeled us in. Now the Dead Island crew is at it again, with a new sequel to hype and yet another trailer that may leave you reaching for the tissues and irritated and the final product. Here’s the trailer for Dead Island: Riptide.
Don’t get me wrong, I actually enjoyed the first Dead Island game. It was just not as all as advertised. I would have loved to see a zombie game that actually had that level of emotional engagement and that involved genuine feelings of desperation and being hopelessly outnumbered by lumbering things that want to eat you alive. That just wasn’t Dead Island. (Although it looks like we’ll be getting something pretty close to that description with The Last of Us.) I can’t fault Techland and Deep Silver for sticking with the same sort of ad campaign that worked well for them last time. And hey, the trailer is kind of beautiful little short story in and of itself, and that’s just fine by me.
Dead Island: Riptide is set to arrive in 2013, and it will probably not make you cry.
