IFC Midnight’s +1 is shaping up to be an interesting movie. At first glance it looks like your average “my parents are away so lets have an epic rager” film. Those can be fun enough, but by this point we’ve all seen quite a few attempts, some better than others, and you have to do something new and unique to make them stand out from the crowd. In +1’s case, they’ve infused the premise with a serious Twilight Zone or Invasion of the Body Snatchers vibe. And now they’ve upped the stakes with a new red band trailer and clip from the film.

+1 is full to overflowing with pretty young folks and all of the standard types you usually see over the course of cinematic keggers. You’ve got jocks and nerds and random hot girls and guys making poor, alcohol fueled decisions. There’s some couple drama as David (Rhys Wakefield) returns from college to visit his girlfriend Jill (Ashley Hinshaw) only to get caught making out with someone else. Uh oh. What have movies taught us over the years is the best thing you can do in this situation? Why go to a big ass party with your smart ass best friend Teddy (Logan Miller), of course.

At first things are normal party fare, like drunk people do drunk things, and Jill showing up to add some angst to proceedings. Things, however, get out of hand when then entire party shows up at the party. Watching this trailer you’re not sure exactly what’s going on. Are they clones, pod people from outer space, or maybe time travelers? Whatever their origins, these doppelgangers are up to no good, as you can clearly see when some of them begin offing each other. Nothing kills a party quite like a murder spree.

The new clip, from Dread Central, feels like a throwaway. If you were to go by its contents, you wouldn’t grasp any of the sci-fi or horror elements at all. It’s just Teddy hitting on a girl that, though she is alone and doesn’t know anyone, is clearly out of his league and he makes an ass out of himself trying to charm her. It’s a moment you’ve seen countless times in movies before, and you can’t help but imagine there will be a lot of this to wade through until we get to the good stuff. Hopefully the folks behind +1 will be smart enough to blaze through the generic aspects and get to the fun.

+1 made some noise earlier this year at SXSW and hit theaters and VOD on September 20.
