See An Elderly Spock Share His Wisdom In Star Trek: Resurgence First Look

Leonard Nimoy passed away seven years ago, but a new actor seems to be channeling the late legend in scenes of the upcoming narrative adventure game Star Trek: Resurgence. Coming from some of the same people who created great entries like A Wolf Among Us and The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series, Resurgence has previewed new video and images, including an aging Spock debriefing one of the game’s two playable characters. Whoever’s voicing Spock has got the character just about as perfectly as you could without the last name “Nimoy.”

IGN released a first look preview for Star Trek: Resurgence last week, including the aforementioned dialogue scenes with Spock. So far the developers — Dramatic Labs — are keeping the name of the voice actor to themselves. However, the game’s lead writer Dan Martin told IGN that of the literally “hundreds” of candidates who auditioned for Regsurgence‘s Spock, the one who was chosen was “head and shoulders” above the rest. Dramatic Labs was created after the original dissolution of Telltale Games, and as IGN’s Ryan McCaffrey notes in his narration of the first look, a Telltale approach is arguably the ideal way to develop a Star Trek game. Particularly when it comes to the pre-Kelvin Timeline films as well as any of the series from the original to the upcoming Strange New Worlds, things like action and strategy only make up a modest percentage of most Trek fare. That isn’t to say games like the MMORPG Star Trek Online and the FPS Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force don’t have their merit, but neither could come close to really capturing the experience of an episode of the franchise, while Star Trek: Resurgence seems to be doing just that.

There will, however, be significant differences between Dramatic Labs’ Resurgence and older Telltale entries. Martin and Dramatic Labs head Kevin Bruner told IGN that, for one, the entire game will be delivered at once, unlike early Telltale games that were released chapter by chapter. Martin compared Resurgence to a novel with approximately 50 chapters, but each chapter would be shorter and more “easily digestible” than a single chapter of, say, Batman: The Telltale Series. There will also be a lot more opportunity for exploration in Star Trek: Resurgence. The game will be far from open world, however players will have more chances to explore specific areas depending on where their missions take them. Dramatic has also set aside the old Telltale game engine in favor of Epic’s Unreal engine.

As far as when Star Trek: Resurgence is set in the Trek timeline, Dramatic Labs says the game takes place in 2380. That’s one year after the events of the final pre-Kelvin Timeline film, 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis. It’s also the same year that the events of season 1 of Star Trek: Lower Decks begins. Players will control two different characters during Resurgence: Engineering Crewperson Carter Diaz and First Officer Jara Rydek. The story concerns Starfleet intervening in a brewing dust-up between two species — the Hotari and the Olydians — both of whom are crucial in Starfleet’s dilithium supply. There is no specific release date yet for Resurgence, but it’s expected to become available for players on PC — as well as on PlayStation and Xbox consoles — this Spring.
