Selena Gomez Rebooting Sigourney Weaver’s Best Movie

Selena Gomez already has one great Hulu show, so why shouldn't she reboot Sigourney Weaver's best movie as another?

Selena Gomez is looking to reboot Sigourney Weaver’s best movie, the 1988 romantic business comedy Working Girl. According to a report from Deadline, the studio 20th Century is looking to reboot the 1980s classic with the Wizards of Waverly Place with Ilana Peña looking to adapt the property; Peña is known for her writing work on the musical comedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and for creating the Disney+ streaming series Diary of a Future President. While there are few details so far, it is likely that Selena Gomez would be playing the lead in a Working Girl reboot which is expected to stream on Hulu.

Working Girl

Working Girl stars Melanie Griffith as a secretary from Staten Island eager to get ahead in the business world of 1980s Manhattan. It seems probable that Selena Gomez would be playing some version of this role, whether it is directly connected to the character of Tess McGill or just thematically similar. In the original movie, Melanie Griffith’s character dramatically quits her job working for a young Oliver Platt in a sexist, chauvinistic office (cue classic Selena Gomez storm out scene) and manages to get a job working for Sigourney Weaver, who plays the confident executive Katharine Parker. As the movie goes on, Melanie Griffith gets into a love triangle involving Harrison Ford and Sigourney Weaver, a business plan is stolen and passed off as someone else’s work, and eventually, the good people win. As we said, a 1980s classic.

While Working Girl might not be as well remembered as Ghostbusters or Aliens (or Selena Gomez’s number one single “Lose You to Love Me”), it did earn Sigourney Weaver her third Academy Award nomination and is legendary for its iconic 1980s fashion. Though she unbelievably has yet to win one, Sigourney Weaver’s performance as the strong yet duplicitous Katharine is one of the highlights of her career, and a different aspect of her acting persona than the flinty and action-oriented characters she is most known for. Both Harrison Ford and Melanie Griffith were nominated for Oscars for the film, though Working Girl ultimately only won one, for the original song “Let the River Run” by Carly Simon. The film was also an enormous box office success, grossing a total of $103 million in its original run.

Selena Gomez already has a working relationship with Hulu, so updating this Sigourney Weaver movie there would make a lot of sense. Selena Gomez currently stars in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, the acclaimed mystery comedy show created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman. In the show, she portrays Mabel Mora, a young woman with a dark past who is refurbishing an apartment in New York City’s Arconia apartment building. When one of her neighbors is murdered, she teams up with Steve Martin (playing a depressed actor) and Martin Short (playing a very effusive theater producer). Only Murders in the Building is currently airing its second season and has already been renewed for a third, so there is a very good chance we may be having two different Selena Gomez shows on Hulu in the future.
