Frantic New Clip From Battlestar Galactica: Blood And Chrome

Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome, the prequel to Ron Moore’s reimagined BSG series, is one of those shows that feels like it’s been almost here forever. Finally set to premiere this Friday, November 9th, as a web series, the spinoff picks up during the first Cylon war, and promises to be a more action-centric return to that galaxy than the previous attempt, Caprica.
Blood and Chrome will air on Syfy sometime in 2013, with a DVD/Blu-ray release after that if you can wait. Check out this new clip to whet your appetite (but be sure to hit mute when the annoying guy starts talking).
Set up for a 10-episode run—with each installment clocking in between seven and twelve minutes—the story follows a young William Adama. In his pre-commander days, Adama was one hell of a hotshot Viper pilot, as clearly illustrated in this clip. He’s kind of a Maverick from Top Gun kind of character, only in space. You’ll notice slight tip of the cap to Tony Scott’s classic fighter jock bromance.
They do go a bit overboard with the swooping zooms, whip pans, and jittery camera work during the dogfight, and the CG and costumes come across as a bit too clean. Still, this has the potential to be something pretty awesome, even if these 10 episodes are all that we wind up getting. Then again, maybe if enough people watch Blood and Chrome, and if it garners enough attention from the BSG fanbase, Syfy will get on board with making more. It’s nice to see them doing something other than showing marathons of mutant shark-attack movies (not that we don’t all love watching two-headed sharks munch on scantily clad coeds), and creating some honest-to-god hard science fiction.
