It has been almost five years since the last Star Trek movie, Star Trek Beyond, was released in 2016. Since then, the Star Trek series has focused more on television series, including shows like Star Trek Discovery and Picard. Last year, Paramount Pictures president Emma Watts said Star Trek movie properties were on hold until the studio could figure out what direction the series should go. However, a new rumor suggests that a new Star Trek movie could be on the way, one written by Quentin Tarantino that would hopefully star Chris Pine once more.

This piece of gossip comes from writer Daniel Richtman’s Patreon page, where he says that Quentin Tarantino’s Star Trek movie idea is going forward, and that the studio wants Chris Pine to return as James T. Kirk. Richtman doesn’t say where he has heard this rumor, or what evidence he has to support this rumor, but this does seem to be the most promising Star Trek project that has been in the works in recent years.

Over the last few years, Paramount Pictures has had three different major Star Trek movie possibilities in the works. One film in the works was a direct sequel to Star Trek Beyond, which was to be directed by S. J. Clarkson. While the film was announced to be in development in April of 2018, the project was canceled by early 2020. Another project, which was in development when Watts put all Star Trek films on hold, was from FX’s Fargo creator Noah Hawley, which would involve new characters, but would connect to Star Trek canon. While this project was also put on hold, it seems that Hawley won’t be working on Star Trek in the immediate future.

But maybe the most intriguing of all these projects was the one written by Quentin Tarantino. While there was talk that Tarantino might also direct the project, he soon decided that he would only write the screenplay. The film would have been the first R-rated Star Trek film, and it was said this film could be a potential new reboot for the series. Even the stars of the most recent Star Trek films seemed to think they were shooting this project soon, with Patrick Stewart and William Shatner also saying that they would like to be a part of Tarantino’s Star Trek film.

Some who read Quentin Tarantino’s script said that the film had the potential to act almost like a new reboot to this series, even though the inclusion of Chris Pine seems to imply the old cast would still be involved. As Deadline Hollywood points out, a new Star Trek film would need to do well overseas, and certainly keeping the established cast, potentially adding former Star Trek actors, and bringing on Quentin Tarantino would certainly help Star Trek do well internationally.

But as of right now, it still seems like Star Trek films are in a period of stasis, as the series tries to figure out what the best move forward would be. A Quentin Tarantino-written Star Trek film would certainly bring in a new audience that might not consider watching a Star Trek movie, but who knows where Star Trek will actually go when the movies come back.
